Server setup - SaaS

Hi folks,

Many software companies are now marketing SaaS (Software as a Service)

Follow is an example;
http://www.salesforce.com/

I expect to know how they do it.

My stupid way is cloning many VMs allowing each customer having its own server. OR they do it similar to virtual hosting allowing several customes sharing a web server? If it is the later case how to do it. Pointer would be appreciated. TIA
