Just a few hours ago I was banned from this website and I didn't do anything apart from posting like usual and I'm sure I followed the guidelines.

I've emailed the admins multiple times but he hasn't replied. All my posts were deleted as well. The admins didn't give me warning or anything. It's weird, almost as if I've been targeted by some higher up's, like the government . It was a news site and most of the discussions are political.

Any clues as to what might have been the reason?

how are we supposed to know?? *could* be something like them blocking an entire isp, of your isp uses a single ip for all customers like AOL... outside of that, did you make unfavourable comparisons towards their mothers?

I knew I'd get a reply like this. Pretty useless question is what comes to mind when you first read this thread.

I'm really pissed off about this. I didn't do a thing to get banned. And they ban me and delete all my posts which took careful contemplation to craft.

They couldn't have blocked my ISP, where I come from the ISP I use is more than half of the visitors to the site and the ISP issues dynamic IP's.

I'm thinking somebody may have hijacked my account and done something.

I'm just venting my anger I suppose and the very human touch thats missing in online communication is to blame. If the admin knew me in person he wouldn't have done it.

Maybe something happened and he blocked all those he thought could have done something, I've talked about SQL injection during some casual conversations.

Argh!

EDIT: Looks like he filtered out my MAC address too. The only way I can even read the news articles is by using a proxy. But my posts, all those posts that were meaningful and enlightening to many regarding a very real delicate issue, a civil war!

Edit2: MAC addresses apparently don't transfer over the net.

Your original post was confusing, at least to me, when you said "I use this website often...[and] I was banned from this website..." I believe what you meant to say was "There's another website I use often.... and I was banned from that other website..."

As you know, the best you can do is argue your case to the site admin, and hope that he/she sees your point of view and reinstates you. As for LQ, banning a member is uncommon, and the mod team only bans users for severe LQ Rules violations (massive spam, etc)

Maybe someone was using your account to post things which weren't well received by the admin?

Problem was kind of solved. I contacted the admin finally. He says he'll look into it and reconsider.

But my posts are still gone, unless it's still there in the DB's.

St.Jimmy, thanks but I think I managed to convince the admin I didn't do anything wrong.

On another note, any clues as to how he managed to single out my computer? If MAC addresses don't transfer over the net? I think he hasn't blocked my ISP because like I said more than half of the visitors to the site are from that ISP. What other methods are there for an admin to block a specific computer? I have a windows machine which can't access the site either.

so he'll reconsider, so clearly you did piss them off somehow, and i'm still in the dark as to how we're supposed to know, or care about, that. he'd block you by ip address normally. most isp's provide semi-static ip addresses. whilst you don't know what it's goign to be and can't rely on it, it'll often stay the same for months of even years.

Sorry, when I said "I use this website" you guys may have thought it was THIS site (LQ). Misleading and worse if I didn't mention that it's a news resource site.

The thing is I believe he did it in suspicion or somebody did hijack my account.

I posted this thread in disappointment at the loss of my posts and I'm sort of ranting so you guys don't really need to care, not that I don't appreciate the responses.

And yes, I need a blog.

BTW, my IP on the net is different every time I initiate a new connection.

no it doesn't, they just look quite similar as they are both dual hex colon delimited strings, e.g 12:34:56:78:AB:CD

I think the reason they don't pass MAC addresses over the net is because it would make big privacy issues. Finding out a MAC address once is enough to keep track of a person as long as he uses the same network device.

not at all. mac addresses are for layer 2 communications. it has absolutely no role outside of a local subnet. it's totally possible that layer 4 protocols or higher could decide of their own accord to include a mac address as a piece of application data, but tcp/ip doesn't care about privacy, it cares about efficiency and logic.

So today I helped this same admin by making him aware of a XSS vulnerability on his site. He was grateful but no apology for banning me and deleting all of my posts.
