sempron vs amd 64

I'm thinking of upgrading my PC and i am confused a little. I don't know if i should better buy an AMD64 2800+ or Sempron 3100+. The AMD 64 is 18 euro more expensive (or ~22 $). I have read that for 32-bit applications these 2 CPUs have almost the same performance. Given that, would buying the amd 64 be a good idea? Especially for running 64-bit Linux applications.
The 18 euro is not the main problem. I have now an Athlon XP 1600+ and a PSU, that is probably ( i don't know the Watt) too old and i will probably have to buy a new one.

Under linux, you will be able to take advantage of the 64 bit processing more fully than a 32 bit windows user. Also, the sempron processor seems to be a scaled BACK athlon. I'd go for the 64 bit system.

Also sometime in the future Microsoft will be releasing Windows XP 64-bit edition and that will take advantge of your Athlon 64

Congratulations. You've achieved a level of computing that I won't ever achieve. I love gaming to much to go all Linux.
