Is it just me or does anyone else get Disgusted and Sickend by seeing the Nike symbol on athletes uniforms at the Olympics? Its like International acceptance of child labor.

I'll second that.......and add that ALL the people who bought Air Jordan's during the 1990's
were if fact supporting slave labor too...............

I third that. I've actualled chewed people out for buying nikes but now i just make fun of them for paying $100 for a pair of shows that costs $2 to make. I downloaded a documentary about modern corporations and it did have a good section on 3rd labor and child labor. Its about 2gig, called the Corporation and you can get in on bittorrent here

ugenn: now now,,... theres no need for name calling

and i also agree .. seeing nike symbols (or any other symbol thats not related to the Olympics or the sport) is rather sickening ... and distracting, i don't know about other people. but i find it hard not to get pissed while they are trying to brainwash me into buying over priced, uncomfortable shoes made by what as well be forced labor

i was only 8 years old

i never knew that about nike, although i always did wonder why they werent made in the USA. damn was i naive.

edit: aobut the advertising part, i think that that is covered well in this article.

http://maddox.xmission.net/c.cgi?u=i_robot

even though its about i robot, its still get the message accross. BTW, did anyone notice that toyota had all the cars in T3, the matrix 2 had a deal with cadilac, minority report had a deal with lexus(owned by toyota), and the other day i was watching seventh heaven (my parents wath everybody loves raymond and dont turn the tv of when its donef, so as i was walking by the tv i noticed...) and the little girl that needs a tan was driving a toyota prius. COME ON. i mean, the prius is hte coolest car ever(other than a bmw 7xx) but dayumn. its not only toyotas fault, WB is just as guilty. theyd habe imacs sitting on desks in the middle of rooms without a keyboard or a chair or a mouse. just hte imac. noone ever uses it , it just sits there. nbc has a better way to deal with apple, in a counter-advertising sorta way. in the premier (the one where ross loses all his work due to a virus after chandler clicks on nude pictures of anna kornikova email), he was using a powerbook. nbc is owned by microsoft.

Thats a great link, Most movies are just another advertising medium, Thats been going on for a while now and its pretty obvious, Thats one of the reasons I dont go to the movies anymore. Now that converse all stars (formerly my favorite sneaker) are made in china I will no longer purchase them. Up until 2002 I had bought at least one pair a year, No more. One of the most startling things I heard was that GM is coming out with its first made in china Cadillac, OMG, American cars are crappy enough, Instead of just a few recalls a year, Now theyre not gonna work at all. LMAO.

You know, I don't like slave labor going on anywhere or child slave labor but I don't blame Nike full at fault. Any country that allows a large corporation to come in, employ children and make it slave type wages for anyone that works at the factory, is at fault.

The United States and many other countries protect their children and people from these types of businesses, so I lay most of the blame on the country that allows such things.

And I haven't supported Nike since I was 11 not even because of their business practices but rather I think their shoes suck anyways..... I bought a pair and they fell apart within 4 months.. I still have a pair of Vans that are almost 3 years old now and they look practically new.. just getting kind of slick on the bottoms with no grip nowadays

Yes, but if a Country allows the importation of a product made by slave or child labor and know is, then that country has a stake in the criminal act. Thats were capitalism has its failings, Profit at any cost.

I actually went out and bought a pair of redwing boots that are kind of a cross between boots and sneakers cuz the ones from walmart kept falling apart, They are so comfortable, and are holding together great. Theyre made in US but they were 150$. I am saving up for another pair.

yup, vans own. i can wear them for at least a year before they go out. now that i dont have gym in highschool anymore, i can probably wear them for 2 or 3 years(but i wont).

about the countries being at fault, i dont think thats true. if the government dosent allow the nikes of the world to come in, the entire population would starve to death, and there would be an uprising and there would be anarchy and all hell would let loose.

I couldnt disagree more. When A Government allows the importation of a product made by slave or child labor that government is allowing its citizens to purchase them and give money to the continued exploitation of Children and Slave loborers. If a defense attorney knows his client is guilty but continues to work against his clients prosecution that attorney is guilty of aiding and abeting a criminal. If you knowingly buy a stolen car, you are just as guilty as the person that stole it. If you saw someone commit a murder and were in no danger of retribution if you turned that person in and did not you should go to jail.
It is 100% Hypocritical for the US government to make environmental laws and labor laws then go ahead and allow US companies to munufacture products in other countries for the purpose of circumventing those laws and import those products into the US.
