Screensavers that read movie files?

I've Googled this and found nothing -- a reflection on me, I'm sure.

I'm looking for a screensaver that can open a movie file (.avi, .mp4, whatever), take a screenshot, and use the random screenshots (and any .jpg or whatever in the appropriate directory) for the screensaver -- or even background, I suppose.

I don't know of anything that does exactly that.

Example:
Code:
mplayer -vf screenshot -zoom -xy 600 movie.mp4
Press the s key whenever you want and make some images.

ffmpeg -f x11grab
scrot
import
imlib2_grab
Will also capture images.

Python pillow can get images too.

and use the random screenshots
Another Example:
Code:
f=(file1.png file2.png file3.png file4.png file5.png
    file6.png file7.png file8.png file9.png file10.png)

for i in {1..20}; do
    select_f=${f[$RANDOM % ${#f[@]} ]}
    echo "$select_f"
    sleep .5
done

for the screensaver
You'll have to look at the man pages

xfce4-screensaver
xscreensaver
cinnamon-screensaver
deepin-screensaver
gnome-screensaver
kodi-addon-screensavers
mate-screensaver
ukui-screensaver
xssstat

Check out vidwhacker. It's included in the xscreensaver suite.

As an aside, whenever I install a distro that use some lamer fork of xscreensaver (for, as near as I can determine, branding purposes), I remove it and into xscreensaver.

If you're under X.org it's relatively easy to build your own screensaver - start any full screen application, run a movie in a loop... you can take some hints from this repository.
