Saving Music On iPod To External Hard Drive

A friend of mine just asked me how to save all music data from an iPod onto an external hard drive, since he's clearing the iPod's drive in a few days (don't know why). I've never used an iPod, let alone iTunes, so I had no idea what to say. Anybody got any ideas? By the way, this is for Windows, just in case it's important.
