Restting router and modem ??

I was trying to get to LQ and other forums with my Linux box and WIndows but could not due to some googlesyndication problem on both systems so I just turned off my router and modem without rebooting either system, then turned the router and modem back on and waited 2 minutes and then I could browse normally. Could someone let me know what they think the problem was? Thanks
