Hey guys,

I have 2 drives attached, one of which is an NTFS drive, installed with Win XP. I can access my files just fine from my Mandriva installation, on my primary drive. But, Windows no longer boots up, due to a disk error.

I need some kind of a tool which will repair this for me. A chkdsk, basically. Why don't I actually just use chkdsk? Because it reports back "unrecoverable errors". But all the files are perfectly fine.

I think it's just a case of some bad blocks/sectors, etc.

Hope you can help.

Linux's fsck can't do anything with an NTFS drive. There may be commercial disk utilities that could do so, but you'd need a working Windows installation to do that. Since you can still boot into Mandriva and access the files you want on the Windows drive, I'd start archiving what you need to keep onto CD/DVD via k3b. Plan on reinstalling Windows if you still trust the drive or get a new one. If you decide to reuse the drive, do a full block check scan when you reformat it.
