redhater become slacker??
 

i am just have a feeling that, after fedora, many of the redhat users start migrating to others distro, especially slackware. are they lose confident over fedora? or may be slackware become more and more mature in another sense?

i was a redhater before this, after installing fedora, i have totally lost confident over redhat, especially when i noticed that the package manager couldnt working well at first... it was really a discouragement.

however, on the other hand, ppl try to promote the elegance of slack, how slack working stablely, pure, fast and customizable. thus, i had put up my mind to move to slack. i have no point to say no to slack, but finally, reluctantly leave fedora...

anyone has a same feeling as mine??

Personally I always had the mind to switch to Slack, Red Hat was just a starting block for me. The lack of support, the system I had relatively fubar'd did it for me so I switched and I couldn't have been happier. I have learned SO much more, sinec Slack doesn't hold your hand, it says, "Dammit man don't you know how to run a computer?" and if you don't, you get hit, if you take the time to learn, your knowledge grows. And hey I love to learn.

Might want to think about giving SUSE a try. It's very Redhat-ish and it has one of the best implementations of KDE that I've seen.

From most of threads I read in this forum I agree with yenonn. I think a lot of people are looking for alternatives to RedHat now because they don't want to go with Fedora. After RedHat made their announcement I put another hard drive in computer and started messing around with other distros. I've settled on Gentoo for now but it has it issues or I have issues with it. I'm not sure yet.

Have you ever thought about gentoo?

No don't be scared. The install is, well, lets just say a 'little' different then RedHat install and it takes a while to install but its nice once you get it setup.

I use Linux for three months - i am a woman newbie! :)) I used RH 9 for about a month. It was too slow and overbloated so I changed to Slack. A friend of mine had to help me with the installation (I didn't know what the packages are for).

I love Slack - it learns me how to USE linux, not how to click on buttons. I wouldn't change! :)

I have used Red Hat since version 5 in 1999. I don't plan on using Fedora but will probably try both Slackware and Gentoo.

Don't like Mandrake at all. Debian is a maybe. SuSE and Red Hat are becoming way too commercial. Maybe Novell will make improvements with suse. They have done a lot to support XFree86 and GNOME.

I do not hate redhat, if I had a business I will get RHEL for sure.

At home I need something to learn and customerize. FreeBSD and slackware are the best for me. I will use bsd on my Pc and install slackware in my friend's pc.

In gentoo, I ported an unstable kernel and keep losing data so I could not use it. If I hadn't made that mistake I would have liked it.

I switched from Mandrake 8.2 to SuSE 8.2. I hear SuSE 9.0 is great. My bets are with SuSE as they will have IBM's money behind them, and IBM/Novell (is an IBM purchase of Novell in the works? Sounds likely) is committed to bring more desktop solutions (read corporate desktop solutions) to the table.

Fedora might turn out OK though. One of my karate students installed Fedora on his college laptop.

Well, as a mandrake user, who is currently trying to become a gentoo user, I would say, read any install guide, and then register with any forums that you can find, go to the store and buy large quantities of alcohol, tobacco, cigarette papers and a couple of good books.

On the way home find a dealer who can sort you out with some good "ganja".

Then obtain the relevant install disc's and off you go.

Cos thus far, I tried to install slack 9.1 and must have got something spectacularly wrong, cos I figured that it should be straight forward to replace my knoppix/debian install, while keeping the windowsXP and mandrake untouched.

NOT!

The fucking slackware install balls up, meant that my lilo wouldn't boot the mandrake, and even when I did manage to get the mandrake to boot, so I could modify the lilo.conf and remove any non mandrake reference, it still wouldn't boot properly.

I ended up having to do a complete re-install of my mandrake. OK, that went fine. I then thought that maybe the slackware was too hard. I'd heard good things of gentoo, and when I found what seemed to be a really good install guide at gentoo.org, with reassuring noises about installing from a "live CD" (a bit like installing the knoppix, or so I thought), I decided gentoo's the one for me.

NOT

The gentoo is probably really good if you're installing it on an empty hard disc and you get to make everything default, but as i have to keep XP so my partner can use the PC (she refuses to learn anything else), and I hate XP, so have to retain mandrake - and this means that the gentoo install is proving to be a total bastard, though at the moment, it's not been as bad as slackware, cos it hasn't touched my mandrake install - but the little fucker still won't boot. AAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH (:D).

Perhaps, if i'd followed my own shopping advice, I wouldn't be pulling what little hair I have left out by the handful (and I have re-read all 5 Harry Potter books while trying to accomplish this - oh for a bloody magic wand!).

Even if you get stressed out with linux like I do, don't give up. When it works, it's absolutely brilliant.

Maybe during the install, don't let it write to lilo. When installs done, reboot into Mandrake and manually configure lilo.conf.

i have never tried gentoo before, but, i've been staying for slack for about 1 month. slack is totally pure and fast. and i have loaded kernel 2.6test11 for it...then, my slack even working fascinatingly.... my pc isnt a new one... but, slack makes it so stable and fast...almost push the machine into a great performance...i am not an expert of slack...but, most of the thread i read about slack...almost 99% of users giving slack a big thumb...and they are not going to leave slack, after working with slack...fedora, in the other hand, it really need some improvement...i am not trying to promote slack, but after all, a good distro doesnt need a promotion at all. so, i am all the way for slack.....long life slack.....

It's funny to see people move to Slackware and then say to themselves....

"Dang.........this stuff is the shiznit :)"
