Recommendations for Email hosting
 

I have been using Fastmail for many years with my own domains.
After many years on a legacy Family plan they announced a not unreasonable price hike for my next renewal.

Whilst my instinct is to leave things as they are - it seems rock solid, admin is minimal, and some of the family may react to using something different than Fastmail's web client/app - I am checking current alternatives.

Runbox attracts me although I think cost will be similar. Zoho looks very cost effective, potentially free for what I need it for if I make a plan for secondary domains. Does anyone have first hand experience of these services?

What about mail services that come with hosting or domain names? eg. Gandi or OVH MX Plans (which seem to be available to me for a small one-off cost). Any worth recommending?

I could recommend something - but what do you really want? A familiar web interface? Low cost? No cost? If you are willing to pay, what do you want to pay for? Do you actually want hosting? What do you need a domain name for? Your email address?

Do you have n mail your own mail domain?
I pay a hosting provider so that I can keep my email address in the event of a fall-out but it is not cheap. I also pay Hushmail just so I have a backup.
People may well think I am throwing money
away, who knows?

First the easy one. The primary domain is email only.
My wife uses a secondary domain for a small home business, a static website that could be pretty much hosted anywhere (Fastmail actually works quite well but is only occasionally used as a backup), a main contact e-mail and a couple of aliases. I operate a couple more domains, with single email addresses, which I occasionally point at something else.
I use aliases on Fastmail domains for various activities I prefer to keep out my main Inbox and filter them to their own folder.
I don't mind splitting my domains to different services, or losing the Fastmail email aliases. I am also quite happy to manage DNS.

I am not sure webmail is essential and this is tricky. Fastmail is actually a good balance for our needs.
Functionality is more important to me than cosmetics, easy method of server filtering would be a bonus.
The rest of the family though would probably be slightly disappointed at anything without a familiar modern looking interface.

Crucially I want something reliable, a company with a track record. Privacy is moderately important, I definitely don't want a service that uses my data, feel comfortable with the level of security offered by Fastmail and am not too worried about legal jurisdiction. That said European servers would be a bonus.

I probably don't want to spend too much more than the ballpark of my bill with Fastmail 65 USD per year (for 4 users).

Seems to me that the old adage of "If it ain't broke don't fix it" applies here. If you're happy with the service provided and the cost then ask yourself what benefits you'd gain by moving providers and how much work you would have to do to support other family members making the transition.

I have used Fastmail for several years and they have been extremely reliable. I chose them because I never know if using Gmail (besides obvious privacy issues) will just end one day when Google decides Gmail costs too much to maintain. Probably not going to happen but I have a lot of email and I use it all the time. I have recently switched to just using my iCloud account and it also works very well. My mail is backed up locally so not worried about losing anything.

I didn't switch because of anything Fastmail did, I am just trimming costs and I have had data in iCloud for over a decade with zero loss.
