Quick Question: Wan Encapsulation

I was at an interview a couple of months ago. I heard one of the job applicants mention the term "wan encapsulation methods". What does this mean EXACTLY? Is it the general term used to define the methods in which a data packet is encapsulated at each layer of a protocol like TCP/IP or the OSI Layer?
Any info would be appreciated.

WAN encapsulation refers to the method of wrapping a protocol around a data packet. there are a couple of different methods, like HDLC or PPP - it's a pretty general term referring to any WAN protocol.
