Quick question dealing with XP
 

Hey all,

Recently lost my hard drive...I have no idea what happened it just crapped out. So I put it in my parents machine running XP Home as a slave drive it came up perfectly.

Problem...my "home" folder was made in XP Professional and I had set-up a password on the user profile. Now I don't seem to have enough permissions to access the folder in XP Home (to copy all the stuff I want out).

How do I override XP Pro's security so I can get my files?

If nothing else can you tell me what keywords would be best to use in google? the few searches I tried weren't exactly helpful.

Not totally sure, but I think you can take over ownership. Right click on the folder, go to security, then to advanced. Somewhere around there.

You do have to be logged in as an administrator account for this to work.

Note: I just tried this in W2k, it works great. Not totally sure about XP.

Yeh, the above post is exactly right for Win2k, I'm fairly sure it is the same for XP. Unfortunately I don't have either installed on any machines here so I can't give you the exact tabs. However, from memory there are three tabs, so if you log in as an Administrator (normally 'Administrator') and right click on the folder in question, enter into 'Security'?

In there, there should be an ownership tag, you'll have to add the administrator and remove all others. From there, do all your copying :)
