Fortunately for all of us Baby Boomers, the young people do not indulge in this self-defeatest sophistry.
What you are feeling is the effects of the popular delusion that there are only two candidates to vote for, and only two parties one party, which does not represent you. Faced with the obvious influence of corporations bribery, you blithely accept the royal proclamation of King John Roberts the First to the effect that the "supreme law of the land" doesn't say what it actually does about this matter.
You think that there is absolutely nothing that 318.86 million people could do, with regard to the actions of 435 + 100 + 8 + 1 people, without using a rifle.
Fortunately, there are other candidates, other parties, other viewpoints. And, fortunately, the systems of government, rusted-shut with urine though they may be, still do work as their designers intended i-f the people of the country steadfastly demand that they may not do otherwise.
We "boomers" grew up when: you could go to the hospital, and you could get a college education inexpensively. The streets were not lined with pawn-shops. because the Glass-Steagall Act was the law of the land. Teachers were in control of their classrooms, and if you didn't do the work you could flunk and have to repeat the grade ... and you did. There was no Internet, of course, but you knew that you probably could talk on the telephone without being wire-tapped and could mail a letter without it being steamed open or analyzed for marketing purposes. Corporations were forbidden by law from participating in the political process, and everyone knew that the word "corporation" did not appear at all in the US Constitution. And, so on.
Today, "boomers" have presided over all of these things being taken away from the present generation of Americans, right underneath their noses, and we are now wringing our hands, utterly convinced that "this is the way that it must be," merely because the media, which after all is the recipient of the "billions of dollars" that are now spent on political campaigns, insists that "this is the way that it must be."
Fortunately for all of us, there still are Americans who would give the same one-word response that the American general gave to the Germans who told him that all was lost and who demanded his surrender: "N - U - T - S !!"
It will be an interesting next few years.
No, Donald Trump is not the answer, and neither (IMHO) is Hillary Clinton. Both of these are the rusted-over artifacts of a too-long entrenched political apparatchik that long-ago lost its way but who cannot conceive of ever losing control.

In my humble opinion the only reason our military is in Afghanistan is to make sure that the " Taliban " do not curtail the production of opium and heroin like they did before we attacked that country!!
As for " our other military adventures " they seem to be solely for the benefit of Saudi Arabia and Israel and our weapons makers, and the bankers!! I am still entitled to my opinions!!
Fact is, all of "the Trump rhetoric" is basically engineered to reinforce [to Baby Boomers ...] that "the only 'reasonable, remaining' choice is Door Number One."
Never mind how things actually got there.
For example: "Primary" elections.
The US Constitution has no concept of "primaries." So far as it is concerned, there is only one election, every four years, for President. Therefore, by now there ought to be "six or eight or more" equally-qualified candidates for the electorate to choose from. But "The Two-Party (sic ...) System, Inc." will have none of this. Billions of dollars' worth of money shall not be divided among more than two names. "The entire choice, according to 'Us, Inc.,'" shall be a choice between no more than Twain."
The entire process has revealed itself to be nothing more than an empty Farce ... and the two-faced political Corporation that is the cause of it all, simply cannot believe that anyone would dare object to it. "Don't waste your vote!", their machinery bleats, accompanied by billions of dollars' worth of bass speakers . . .
Well I hope reality hits soon. I did on principle agree Trump as a nominee, but thats it. In the end, it is still a decision of crap or shit. Both Drumf and Shillery seem to flip-flop on issues.
Trump is unpredictable, and Shillery is well just a shill.
It seems to me a bit of an overstatement to characterize Hillary as "a shit", assuming you don't mean good fertilizer but rather something to be regarded as potently "EEeeewww!". Look at her record during her tenure as Secy. Of State. That is an extremely powerful position and she mostly just cast good will but didn't "make waves" or a name for herself. BUT! she also didn't cause any difficult or embarrassing diplomatic faux pas when the opportunity surely was there. I suspect this is what we could expect should she become the next US President - no great shakes, but no major faults either. That beats a powder keg "six ways from Sunday" in my book. I'd love someone more truly leader like, but she doesn't appear to be a bad egg, just rather run-of-the-mill.
I sure wish the people of these United States took a real hard look at the people the two major political parties have nominated to be President of the United States!! The both of them really belong in prison cells; neither one of them should be running for president!!
