pronunciation woes

hey

i have a few questions on pronunciation of some linux stuff

gentoo: is it like JEN-2 or just Gen-2?

debian: DAY-BY-AN or DAY-bee-N?

iptables: I-P-tables, or just ip-tubbles?

if you don't have any clue what i mean, say them out loud an i hope it makes sense.

win32sux 06-08-2005 03:08 PM

i'm not sure about gentoo, but debian is like "de-bee-an" and iptables is like "I.P. tables"...

PS: i suspect gentoo is like "gen-too" with the "gen" as in "generation" but like i said, i'm not sure...

going off memory but i think on gentoo's site it says gentoo like gentle its in the faq I think

halo14 06-08-2005 03:20 PM

yes.. gentoo is pronouced like "Gentle" with 'oo' or "Jen-2"

Debian is "Dee-Bee-an"

and yes.. .it's "I-P-Tables"

Mr. New 06-08-2005 03:36 PM

what about kubuntu and ubuntu?

win32sux 06-08-2005 03:50 PM

debian is NOT pronounced "dee-bee-an"... it's pronouced "deb-EE-uhn"...

as in Debra + Ian... (Ian the founder and Debra his wife)...

i guess kubuntu is pronounced the same as ubuntu but with a koo sound at the beginning (koo-boon-too)... although being kde-based and all i wouldn't be surprised if it's supposed to be pronounced K-ubuntu (kay-oo-boon-too), but i doubt it...

That is correct :) I think Debian is the most mispronounced word in the OSS world today (with the possible exception of the constant arguments about how 'Linux' should be pronounced...)

Gentoo is pronounced with a soft 'G' as in gentle.

For both distros this information is on their websites. I know. That's how I found out in the first place :)

CRAP! of all the linux words, this was the one i was really hoping i was right while knowing it was wrong. i thought it was ipp-tah-bulls.

Mr. New 06-09-2005 04:58 PM

fstab is f-s-tab and not f-stab right?

win32sux 06-09-2005 05:12 PM

yeah, "eff-ess-tab"... although "eff-stab" does have a nice, evil, ring to it... ;)

SQL (ess-que-ell)

or

sequel

I know MySQL is My-S-Q-L, but S-Q-L or sequel for the non My-type?

Samba:

pronounced \som ba\ or \sam ba\

I've always pronounced it \som ba\ but I've heard it the other way.

win32sux 06-09-2005 07:02 PM

yeah, "sam-bah" as that's how samba (the brazilian dance) is pronounced - and i assume the name comes from that, as the program makes *nix and windows "dance" together... :)
