problem seeing lvm partition on external usb hard disk

Hi,
i turn on the drive (dmesg output is OK), but i cannot see the lvm device in /dev. "vgchange -a y" doesn't show it either. Afterwards i try to remove it, but get "Volume group "backup" still contains 1 logical volume(s)". Then "vgchange -a y" shows it! What's wrong?
