Problem loading WIN98 AFTER LINUX 9.2 INSTALLED on seperate hard disk

Hi People,

i wonder if you can help - I have recently purchased a PC that has come loaded with Mandrake Linux 9.2. I have the requirement however to have Windows 98 on a second hard disk. I have un plugged the Linux Hard Disk and tried to install Win98 as normal and seem to be going around in endless circles.

I get an error message as follows:-

Error loading user.exe. You must re install windows

I have used the fix for this from microsoft site exctract etc

I then get send error message :-

Whilst initializing device IOS an I/O sub system driver fails to load.

Either a file in the IO sub sys subdir is corrupt or system low on memory.

I have fix for this too

ren iosubsys iosubold

However this just sends me back around to first error message when I reload.

IS THIS PROBLEM OCCURING BECAUSE LINUX HAS CHANGED THE MBR?

IS LILO A FACTOR?

IM STUMPED AND WOULD BE GRATEFUL FOR SOME IDEAS.

REGARDS

Welcome to LQ.

I seriously doubt if this is linux or mbr related - you are obviously getting further than that.

Have you tried reinstalling windows 98?

Since you have removed the disk with Linux on it and installed another drive for Windows, there is no MBR problem, since it resides on the first track of the hard drive. If you computer is fairly new, I'd guess that your problems are related to Windows 98's age. I have a P-III system with a SB Live! sound card, ATI Rage128 Pro graphics card, Linksys ethernet card, etc. It took me 4-1/2 hours of installing a searching for drivers with my other computer to get everything working, for the simple reason that Win98 was slightly older than my hardware and it wasn't supported out o fthe box. I was lucky - my hardware is fairly generic, so I got it to work.

I hope that I am wrong, but it looks like '98 is clashing with your hardware - its too new.
