Yeah sendmail is used on a lot of mail servers, but postfix and exim seem to be rapidly gaining popularity due to some serious bugs discovered in sendmail a while ago.
Sendmail has been around for ages. I'm sure the majority of businesses that have been using email started off or still currently use it. Though Postfix like mentioned above is growing in popularity which is based off of sendmail is easier to configure and has started off with a good track record.
