unreal tournament - between 60 and 90 (up to 170 w/o vsync),
depending on the mod (Unreal Fortress is heavy, The Third Reich
is less heavy, normal UT without mods runs best) - 1024x768x32bit.
UT2003 - 30 - 50 fps in 800x600 32bit; blob shadows on, rest off.
i recently (= several weeks ago) switched from windows xp to linux,
and i must say that games perform better in linux (even after tweaking
everying in xp; running alternate shell to save resources, 8bit wallp,
disabled uneccesary services, etc. you name it).
i can recommend linux to any windows user who feels he or she has
lost control over what happens on their system, as well as to those
who don't want to upgrade their hardware but want that little 'oomph'
out their system.
productivity for me did not have to suffer; open source makes it so
that there are often several products which can do the same as
the windows equivalent you've grown fond of.

Lucky.
Im left w/ a messely(sp) AMD Athlon XP 2100+ 333fsb w/ 256mb DDR ram. And a, ahem...a voodoo4 32 mb. You've gotta see how UT2k3 runs for me.
Edit: Just remembered UT2k3 wasn't installed on that machine. That was on my 800mhz machine w/ the same vid card. That you've got to see. Ive yet to install it on the amd.
i tried glx gears at 24 bit color 1024x768 res. and got around 700fps
then i switched to 16 bit and its up to ~1400fps
i can't believe the color depth change made such a big difference!
