the Gnome desktop is just too much for this old pc...
An Xterm on the desktop in my 'newstuff' directory, which when I issue a command, filters and shows only .rars, .zips, .tgz/.tar.gz, .001, .002, etc, in the xterm window, so that I can unrar, unzip, or cat, whatever (it uses the 'less' command for formatting (space to next page, and page numbering).
Also Xpad at the bottom of the screen for temporary notes.
Do you have a resolution thats like insanely wide or something?
EDIT: 3040x900?! What kind of monitor have you got? Now THATS what I call a 'widescreen.'

No. What I think it he has is dual monitors. For some reason, if you have dual monitors and don't mirror the screens what you get is a very long screenshot.
