I figured that since normal people are going to see this, it might as well look pretty, so i've got more than just a run command box and a clock...
Who knows, I might even start using the mouse more, now it's in the middle of the keyboard and so easy to get at...
I'm _really_ liking XFCE. It feels like gnome, but with almost all the things I didn't like about it made good. And it's nicely lightweight, which is handy on a 9 year old laptop. Don't really like the menu editing, but I'm sure I'll work it out.
i'd post my desktop if i could figure out how to use transparency with tinting/shading again.. either aterm, fbpager or xchat or anyother application can use it and im going MAD becourse there is no help to find anywhere :S

Interesting. What is the specification of your laptop, and what model is it?
Also, does your battery hold charge?
I recently got a laptop off ebay. It is about 6 years old, I think... an IBM thinkpad T22. With the right tweaking, I've got Ubuntu Dapper 6.06 with GNOME running on it, very nicely. (Pentium 3 900MHz, 256MB RAM)
Here is my latest. Most everything is courtesy of Gnome-look.org. I also recently figured out how to shade a window in fedora's compiz (ctrl-alt s). Feb 22 Screenshot
I've been playing around a lot with my old desktop and got it just about perfect now. Caution: Windows XP. It just home edition... since everyone seems to like that shiney look (so do I) I just downloaded MCE's theme (royal theme it's called?). Not pictured... In the registry I turned off a lot of crap that was in the start menu (only shut off, run, settings, and some custom made folders are left).
Everything looks and seems good... now only If I could get some parts of XGL and I'd be set.
The first link is a clean look of my desktop. The second has WMP11 playing some Epica albums and the third is my own cross-platform Media Player written in Java. I still have not released it public, but hope to do it soon when some bugs are sorted of.
Anyone looking to have the same desktop, take a look here:
I haven't checked the license, but it is free at least. Since it is basically a combination of GPL icons, I doubt there is any problem. It does look good though and it does not take any more resource than XP default UI does, which is neat ^_^;;

that is the one thing I hate, a windows desktop trying to imitate another oses "looks", and dam man move tux off your startmenu
First, the same could be said about KDE and Gnome. But if I say that KDE and Gnome are trying to copy Windows, Linux users will say: "It is good, because it makes the new Linux user feel more at home". Now, when someone try to enhance Windows desktop, comes peoples like you and flame it... It is just sad, really.
And about the tux... I use whatever I want on my desktop and I believe you do the same, so don't tell me what to do. It is my right to use whatever I want and I don't remember asking you anything, so shut up. Thanks!

you all are too funny sometimes.. But thats a slick look for windows xp. I actually might try it considering I hate the way it looks now with its lisa frank look.
I would post a link to my linux desktop but im not done with it yet. Im actually considering moving to enlightenment from icewm but im not sure yet as ice works just fine and I know I can easily make a theme for it.
That is pretty much the way I fee about the Windows XP desktop exvor. I found the default Blue-theme just horrible and I usually use the Classic one, which isn't good either (but definitely less ugly).
For the past years I've been testing a lot of themes for XP and some are pretty good. So far I liked the one I am using now the best. I mean, I just have to use Windows, especially for gaming, so I might as well try to make it pleasant (not eye candy only, but the default WindowsXP desktop lacks a lot of features).
So far, it is looking good and running smooth. It is all I need
