And how those news are Slackware related? You want another systemd hate fest thread? :D

Oh, wait! Apparently he also retired from the PulseAudio development. So what?

Na, if anyone wants to get onto the the hate systemd bandwagon, it is already spent on /.
What is of interest is where he moved to.
Good luck windows registry!

Today Microsoft develops it's own Linux distribution, named CBL Mariner.

I see nothing strange that a major Linux developer decided to move from a Linux developing company to another. And usually this happens because the new company pays better.

So, what's your problem? You are jealous that Mr. Poettering will be paid better in future?

RadicalDreamer 07-17-2022 03:51 PM

He can fix Windows so if you install apps on it, it won't slow down to a crawl and have to be reinstalled! He'll probably be working on their Linux cloud stuff but one can dream!

Has this been confirmed by something that isn't Phoronix yet?

frankbell 07-17-2022 09:17 PM

There's an existing thread on this topic: https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...ft-4175714336/

He screwed the whole eco system of Linux with SystemD.
It would be of course a possibility that he would join Microsoft.

But better, Rust will enter the kernel soon, Wayland will replace X11/Xorg ;)

See post #25 of the previous thread on this topic - Christian Brauner from Microsoft stated on Twitter they now work together.

How about it's related since Slackware doesn't run systemd? Thank God.

Glad he's at MicroSoft now. At least he can't screw Linux up any further. Any you systemd zealots - go look at some of the code. It's on github.

It's not related because it's basically systemd news - see bellow. Why the Slackers should care?

Looks like the future will have disappointing news for you... ;)

Because from what I heard, he's hired by Microsoft to work exclusively on systemd - almost certainly for their own Enterprise Linux distribution. It's named CBL-Mariner.

Yeah, the "Microsoft Linux" is not a joke anymore, it really exists since several years.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CBL-Mariner
https://github.com/microsoft/CBL-Mariner

And yes, I agree... His retirement from other projects is a great loss for the PulseAudio and may represent that RedHat intends to deprecate it soon in favor of PipeWire. ;)

BTW, I'm not a systemd zealot, BUT neither I hate it. I'm quite fine with both SysV init and systemd. Neither one bitten my hand yet.

What Linux developer might that be? I thought we were talking about Poettering.

enorbet 07-21-2022 08:43 PM

What? Someone imagined IBM would want him?

With Poettering onboard Microsoft, MS Windows 12 is doomed to have Systemd ;)
