penguin: why is penguin the mascot for Linux?

I read this on the web:

http://www.linux.org/info/penguin.html
Quote:

Some people have told me they don't think a fat penguin really embodies the grace of Linux, which just tells me they have never seen a angry penguin charging at them in excess of 100mph. They'd be a lot more careful about what they say if they had.
-- Linus Torvalds
I am going to go to the zoo tomorrow. I know. I know. You do not think that the zoo has anything at all to do with Linux. Why bring it up? I think that I am becoming a Linux addict! They have penguins at the zoo! I checked on the web! Mom and dad are taking me to the zoo because they think that I will go to biology school if I go to the zoo and see all the cool animals. At first I was so mad at them. I went to web and found out they have penguins. Now I want so badly to go to zoo and see penguins! I have no camera so I can not post a picture of the penguins. I think that mom and dad will get me a camera. Then I can post.

I still do not understand some things about why a penguin is a mascot. I know. I know. You think that I read it on the weg at www.linux.org. I read the web about the penguin contest. I just do not understand it. See this:

Quote:

"Now, with penguins, (cuddly such), "contented" means it has either just gotten laid, or it's stuffed on herring. Take it from me, I'm an expert on penguins, those are really the only two options."
1) What does "laid" penguin mean? I do not get it.

2) I had herring when mom and dad had a party for last summer. It tastes terrible. I did not like it. Why does penguin eating herring make it win the contest for mascot? I do not get it.

I just got a call that I am getting my Macintosh G5 tomorrow from my friend for free! They are getting a new Macintosh for college today...I can not wait until tomorrow.

Can I put Linux on a G5? Will it still run Adobe Photoshop? I can use Adobe in art school.

Ok, let's see.....

If I remember correctly, Linus has more commentary on why the penguin. I think I read it in Software Rebel? And yes, penguins rock.

A "laid" penguin is a penguin who has just finished intercourse.

Yes, you can install Linux on a G5. And you can run photoshop on a G5. But not both at the same time. You could keep OS 9/X on the G5 and dual boot Linux/MacOS and run Photoshop while under MacOS.

Thank you for your comment.

Someone told me to "RTFM". I did not know what that meant so I was confused for some time. I thought that it was a command.

bash: RTFM: command not found

Then I found out what RTFM meant. When I read the web about the penguin, I looked for the M that would explain what "laid" was. I think I get it now.

Now that you know what laid is you can move onto killing all the daemon's children ;) That will save many penguins!

This is all way too many words!! Is not the Penguin the Linux mascot simply because Linus Torvalds likes penguins?

You can get the RTFM program here:
http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/...ch/rtfm/0.6.0/

One of the most recommended and yet, unknown programs around!

Linus chose a penguin because the bent paperclip was already taken.

;)
