Pear to pear (torrents) applications.
 

I have a program to download torrents (pear to pear) and it sometimes, when downloading a particular file, places the word "stalled" besides the file name and it no longer downloads. The same happens with other pear to pear applications. What does this word mean? I've looked in wikipedia and in wiktionary but couldn't find the meaning (in the context of IT). And is there a command I can give the program to make it try to go out of that state?

Thanks. According to your link one can remove and re-add the torrent to force the program to resume. Unfortunately reusing a magnet link doesn't work, says your link. But, alas, currently most torrents are magnet links, as for example in thepiratebay dot org, which is a site I use every day.

But what I really wanted to know is this: once the torrent is in the stalled condition, will it remain in that condition for ever? Or, on the contrary, there can be an ulterior moment when the program resumes the downloading?

Just as a technicality, it's 'peer', as in an equal; not 'pear', which is a fruit.

I don't think it's possible to know in general. "Stalled" is a symptom (specifically, that the transfer speed is at zero), whether it will end depends on the cause. For example, in the linked github thread, two possible causes are suggested: lack of peers to provide more data, and the disk being full. The first one could change after some time, the second not (unless you take some action to fix it).

Torrenting involves many, many factors most of which are outside your grasp.
"Stalled" seems to just mean there's not enough peers to actually do anything meaningful. Just wait it out. Or try to increase the maximum numbers of active torrents, maximum DL/UL speed etc. in your client's settings.
