Pc build going south
Hi all
I’m in the middle of a pc build and have ran into several issues and am needing advice. Specs: Motherboard- gigabyte GA-X79-UD5 (r 1.0) CPU- intel i7 3680 Memory- Corsair ddr3 1600 (vengeance) Graphics card- AMD FirePro W7100 Seems like a good combo but unfortunately the condition of the motherboard,CPU and graphics card are unknown. Got them for free during a friend’s cleanup. Problem: 1 using a thermaltake 850watt PSU I have everything seems to be working however I can’t get post or bios as this graphics card uses DisplayPort 1.2. I have a converter cable to hdmi but still no picture and I dunno if it’s active or not. Any suggestions on how to get a screen going would be great. The power supply I used for testing is 100% adequate. 2. This motherboard is a socket LGA2011 what year is this socket? Any good? I don’t want to spend too much money if this is all junk Cheers. |
Hello chicken dance
Since that CPU has built-in graphics I can think of something you need to check right away. Since the BIOS almost certainly has a setting to choose either built-in or PCIe as preferred graphics, what outputs does it have and have you tried that or those? Additionally since adapters are common points of failure have you tried an actual display port cable and each of the 4 outputs? Might be wise to reinsert the graphics card a few times to insure contacts aren't dirty or corroded or even switch which slot is being used. Also it's likely a good idea to open up the box and watch during power up to see the LED display for any error codes. It has dual BIOS chips and that usually means one is a backup and there may be a jumper to toggle to see if the codes change at all. Although this set is a few years old there's nothing wrong that I am aware of with an i7-3680. That's newer than this box I'm typing on and it runs every game I throw at it just fine. BTW it is possible if none of this fixes graphics, which is obviously the first important issue so you can see what's going on not to mention a bit unlikely that both are down, since the graphics card is PCIe, you could try it in just about any mobo you or a friend or family member have available to rule out CPU failure and rule in that the graphics even would work if setup right. Best wishes... sounds like a fun project and pretty sweet results if and when you get it up... even at twice the price ;) |
bounce on down to the pc store, or dance, whichever you prefer and get a cheep vga of whatever card you need, plug it in, it should work, it is brand new, then if you get video you'll know that card is crapped out, an on-board cpu video is a need to be used until you get enough money to get yourself a more gooder card, as you should be taking that one back for a refund. it was just a tester card. :D
could be the RAM preventing it from booting too. reset, do the same with RAM or see if your friend has a space stick he knows work that you can use to see if it is the RAM you got. you need to apply process of elimination ... |
Hey thanks for the reply’s!
The motherboard has no connectivity for cpu graphics. So I’ll have to hit up a friend for testing the graphics card. I have tried all the DisplayPort connections but still nothing and have changed slots. I was however getting boot loop until I moved the memory into different slots now it stays on. The memory I’m using is new. Seriously starting to think it’s the cable. Surely if the motherboard doesn’t have provisions for cpu graphics the bios would automatically switch to pcie? Thanks. |
Just curious, but are you getting any beep codes when you power up? Is so, how many?

Thanks. |
OK, I'm a bit confused now. Is the power supply actually running when you press the power button? Fans turning, etc.?

That's probably not telling your crap, really. If your fans aren't running on that PSU, then your processor has not even initialized it. You probably only have a +5VDC trickle line running off that PSU to the mobo.
If that's a standard ATX connector on that PSU, you can disconnect it from the mobo and short the GREEN lead to any BLACK lead with a paper clip to get it to initialize. Once it's up, you can check the voltages on the outputs with a volt meter. Or, easier... you can just pop that PSU into another known working system to check that it actually is not a PSU issue. In THIS video, the person is shorting GREEN/BLACK while still plugged into the mobo. I do NOT recommend this. There may be issues with your mobo as to why it's not powering up. Just check the PSU while disconnected to eliminate that device as being the problem. |

Just to clarify. Attachment 32340 |
Ah... clarification was needed. Disregard the doddering ol' Electronic Tech's ramblings above and get on with your troubleshooting. LUCK with it. Looks like it's going to be a nice system! :)

I’m confused. You mentioned the MB has no connections for CPU graphics but then you mentioned display port. Are their display port connections on the back of the board? If so, then I would check to see if BIOS is set to onboard graphics or an external card as mentioned previously. Boards with CPU graphics capability have display port, hdmi or dvi connectors on the back of the board. I have one and if my bios is set to an external card and I am using CPU graphics, I get no output.

I'll keep an eye on this thread. Hopefully, you'll get this figured out quickly. :)
