For my use I already have a FLOSS version of windows. I run linux and I use about 3 or 4 windows based apps with crossover and I play games with cedega. Of course it's not the solution for everyone, but it's getting there...

Then people must just stop using Microsoft products and switch to Linux. Full stop. Halfway measures like asking for a FOSS Windows version is a dream.

Microsoft will not allow its OS to be copied and I can see patent and copyright issues when developers try to get Windows apps to work in a new OpenSource Windows.

I'm very proud to say after I export my emails and address book from Windows I'm erasing my FAT32 partition tomorrow... Maybe I'll backup a few of the files on it...

No they won't. Microsoft has created a captive audience that it doesn't even need to listen to to keep the cash flowing.

Hi all!

aktiwers, I started using Linux 1993, after a friend told me in maybe late 1992 about it. We were in a tech college and he had a very strange CD from I don't know where... he was just crazy about it, I mean he knew right from the start "THIS IS *** IT". I practically hated it, Windows 3.1 was better IMHO [hahaha] - well that was then. Later somewhen during the Win95&98 times I switched to Red Hat. Never looked back.

So whats the point?
a) Things take time
b) You need time too

Trust me. Things where ALOT harder 5 years ago!!
More and more academics and professionals benefit from open-source, more and more programmers will join in - the last 10 years were just the start (imo). A matter of time.

Take LINUXQUESTIONS for example... I was around 2000 reading it... how many postings were there a day - 5, 10 - I don't remember. Let's say VERY FEW! Today? Huuuh!

*wink* Same thing. Takes time :)) x86h

oh super. now this is just another linux vs windows thread... if it geos that way much more, i'll merge it with one of the older dinosaur shaped threads.

I think anytime MS is mentioned in any topic it immediately goes into the Windows vs. linux mode.

amosf 02-01-2005 08:53 PM

Yep. MS needs to release a version of linus to add some variety to these types of discussion... :)

As far as "open sourcing" Windoze,... as someone else said, ReactOS is the closest thing to it. Problem is that it doesn't run much application code yet.

The nice thing about ReactOS is that because it is open source, under a GPL license, I believe, is that it will give back a lot to the open source community. Particularly, wine will benefit from what it does. Right now, however, ReactOS is benefiting more from Wine than Wine is benefiting from ReactOS.
