open source entry level desktop publishing for windows?
 

I've recently started working as a sysadmin for a office of twelve people using mostly windows 98. I'm looking to make a gradual transition to linux, so I'm looking for cross-platform open source programs that work in both windows and linux.

This one lady I can so far replace everything except her desktop publishing software. It's strictly entry level stuff. She had Adobe Print Shop, which she liked. However, she hasn't been able to use it since the disc went AWOL (before I started working here). She had Microsoft Publisher (the other people in the office said that it does everything print shop does when I asked them about the disc), but there's a license snafu. I can probably straighten out that snafu, but now's a good of a time as any to migrate to a different program.

So does anybody know of a good opensource entry-level desktop publishing program that works on windows? Similar to Adobe Print Shop or Microsoft Publisher. I know about Scribus, but it doesn't seem to have a windows version.

there might not be good cross platform programs for people to get used to it, might wanna start thinking up on a good speech so everyone will understand that they have to relearn how to use a computer (or learn the correct way?)

worst comes to shove just make them use M$paint and notepad so when you put linux on they will love all the extra features that notepad and M$pain dont have

probably not entry level... but give "the gimp" a try.

Damn, that's what I was afraid of. I guess I'll just have to reinstall Publisher for now. Funny, people keep asking about what programs need to be ported/cloned to linux. I know of more programs that I would like to see ported to Windows from Linux then the other way around. It would be nice to have a gratis cd-burning program that I could distribute freely. (Libre would just be gravy.)

I'm working on my speech anyway, but I'm the only one who knows about the plans to migrate. The less change the users have to deal with, the less resistence to the changeover there will be. Thumbscrews only take you so far!

I'm planning on giving her the gimp, but I thought the gimp was more image-manipulation, like photoshop, not desktop publication. I wouldn't know - I don't use either kind of program personally. I'm not even sure she will even use gimp in her work, but since it's crossplatform, might as well give her the hookup.
