Open source comes to medicine!

'As with other areas of scientific inquiry, the best path forward is more transparency. For clinical epidemiology studies, such journals as the Annals of Internal Medicine and others, as well as the National Institutes of Health, have in the past decade moved toward encouraging and, in some cases, requiring various degrees of public data sharing so that other investigators can attempt to reproduce findings, hence promoting public trust in the findings. For simulation models developed for CEA, the best way to ensure reproducibility is to release the computer instructions that are readable by humans (that is, the model's "source code").

'Publication of source code allows others to assess whether conclusions remain valid when replacing author assumptions with plausible alternatives.'

Except that I have my doubts on the sincerity of those who have, and still do, put the real information behind a hefty paywall.

I have my doubts on the sincerity of the latest, greatest, and oh so deliciously trendy Open Source (c) movement in general.

Was this the tragic failing of ESR's grand idea of a world where the corporate and the "us" exist together in love and harmony? Not for me to say.
