Open, but not as usual article

Hi, i was reading this article http://www.economist.com/business/di...ory_id=5624944
one part wrote- The contributors are typically motivated less by altruism than by self-interest. And far from being a wide-open community, projects often contain at their heart a small close-knit group.

Is it true? i alway thought open source developed by alot of peoples.

This article seem to write alot of bad things on open source.

This comes as no surprise! The economist recently started to attack all enterpises based on ethical values including fair trade, and all "ethical shopping". I was expecting that an attack to open-source was on the way.

This claim is particularly funny:
Quote:
Indeed, open source might already have reached a self-limiting state, says Steven Weber, a political scientist at the University of California at Berkeley, and author of “The Success of Open Source” (Harvard University Press, 2004). “Linux is good at doing what other things already have done, but more cheaply—but can it do anything new? Wikipedia is an assembly of already-known knowledge,” he says.
Linux is unable to do anything new. So where stuff like LaTeX or GPG (just to mention two names, please add more) is taken from?
