On the borderline: switching back to linux

Hey guys, I thought I'd start out with a controversial quote to piss everyone off. No, I'm just kidding.

Anyway, I fear I may be losing linux. I went out and bought SuSE 8.2 (I believe in SUPPORTING OSS) a while ago. I had that up and running, that was great. But, for some reason, I've been using XP far more lately. It might be because of the booting problems I had with it, along with other reasons. I certainly like screwing around in configuration files, but it just doesn't appeal to me as much anymore. I need something to switch me back into using linux more. Any advice, suggestions, financial contributions, Nobel Peace Prizes, marriage requests, or checks would be appreciated.

Finally, a response, not a very good one though. Isn't there anything better? No matter what, I'm keeping XP. I need it for games.

sorry. (I felt bad there were no responses)

XP... umm... *refrains from comment*

anyway, your choice. Take up programming? that always brings me back. put up a server, and put a website online.
Uninstall all the stuff on XP (word, office in general etc) and only leave the games. remove all excess stuff. That way you will force yourself, after playing the game to boot linux to do anything else.

something I am still looking forward to doing, but have been seriously delayed with, is taking up some sort of open source programming.
Would definatly give you something to do.

<edit> oops, ya beat me to it

Get rid of XP before it burns a hole through your hard drive. I've seen it happen a million times.

Buy WineX. Or get games that actually run with Linux natively. Unreal 2k4 looks like one of the most splendiferous games I've seen in quite a while even though it crawls on my ancient machine. If RPGs are more your flavor, try Neverwinter Nights. That game pimps, especially if you get both of the expansion packs.

I'll be back if I can think of more stuff.

I could easily give up the games, because I mostly play console games anyway, but I still want a Windows partition, regardless. I don't want to be fiddling with trying to find out why OOo runs so crappily in linux when I have an essay due. I guess I could try learning more about programming. I know a little bit, like just some basic BASIC (heh) and JavaScript, but I'm going to be taking a programming class in school for C++. And since GCC is already installed, I guess I could do that first. Whoa, UT2004 runs natively on linux? That might be a good game for testing out if MY NVIDIA DRIVERS ACTUALLY WORK THIS TIME. Doesn't WineX cost money, though? I'm way too cheap for that. What's the point if I already have a Windows partition. Hell, I mostly use the same apps on windows as I do on linux anyway. OOo and Firebird/fox.

I read that learning C++ is vastly easier if you learn C first. I'm curious what the booting problems are, not using SuSe, but I run my Red Hat on it's own drive, I'm not a big fan of dual booting, though I know it works fine on large enough drives.

Well, my drive is partitioned, linux has it's own hard drive. I guess that would still be considered dual booting if I had both, wouldn't it? Maybe I'm wrong. Linux actually runs worse than Windows, maybe because I gave Linux a cheap, worn down drive. If linux runs smoother, it may help a lot in getting me back. I really like the idea of OSS, though. And when I get to be a better programmer, I really want to help in the programming of open-source applications, like Mozilla possibly. As for my booting problem, http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ight=lilo+grub
I WILL have my /ect/lilo.conf posted in at least seven hours. Please respond to my problem in THAT thread, not this one. Thanks, guys (and possibly girls)

Hey Squall, The Official U.S. Army game runs on Linux, as Well as FlightGear, which is supposed to be the most advanced flight simulator. There a lot of great games to run on Linux. Go to happypenguin.org

I posted my lilo.conf in that post for your information. I just booted back into linux about 5 minutes (haven't used it for a while) and I'm thoroughly enjoying it again.

thanks

I think all it took was to just boot back in, the thrill of using it again was enough. I think I'm hooked again.
