The forum rules do not permit advertising. Please visit http://www.linuxquestions.org/advertising/ for more information on advertising. Feel free to contact the forum admin if you have any questions about this policy.

C'mon, it's not like there's a shortage of cheap PC's, just check your local classifieds or Ebay. Either way LQ is not the place for these sorts of solicitations. -- J.W.

It's likely directed at the original poster. However, it applies to anyone, truly anyone.

If you have 400 posts, and throw up a question regarding a new piece of hardware you are thinking of adding to your system, and link to a pricewatch item, I doubt it would be taken as advertising. However, if you have 3-4 posts, and your fifth post is a link to freeipods.com/12345 where 12345 is obviously your userid, it's generally understood IMHO that is advertising. Things like the above are a little more grey and require a bit of thought, and J.W. made a judgment call that it's advertising.

HTH

Cool

My apologies if my post seemed harsh; in retrospect I should have phrased it differently.

From my point of view the OP was posting what essentially amounted to a "Wanted" ad, which would be treated the same as "For Sale" ads. For the same reasons that we don't allow selling in the forums, neither should we allow ads soliciting merchandise, cars, jobs, etc, etc, etc. Again, sorry if my original post seemed harsh. -- J.W.

Put an ad in a local paper. If you live in a City of any size at all, it may surprise you at just how many folks are throwing them in the trash.

You can also look into schools (both on grade and university). Occasionally when my university gets money that is deemed to be used on us students, they upgrade a random computer lab and sometimes auction off the older ones. Or, if you know some of the system admins, you can trade stuff for hardware heading for the trash.

Yep, definately look at schools and universities. Often I look in bins around my university and you can sometimes find something. Found a P2 there once.
