I found out a couple of hours ago that the comedian, writer and actor Rik Mayall who was responsible for uttering my more frivolous quote died today. I wish I'd have found a quote from the man himself.
I saw him live a few years ago in Bottom Live 4 -- it was rude, crude, childish at times but very funny and with some intelligent observations.
I can't find a reference, therefore I don't know who wrote it, but I remember in Bottom Eddie saying something like "My relative was in The Great War!" to which Ritchie replied "But war is never great, it's s***". "Ah," replies Eddie "OK, my relative was in the in the s****y war.".
I know the above isn't exactly philosophy but it always made me think as well as chuckle.

We fought to survive - we fought back
From the oppression of our own lives
We fight against what’s wrong
Because it’s us against the world
We fight to live our lives, we fight back
To live the way we want and strive
We fight against what’s wrong
Because it’s us against the world
Us against the world

“We all know that any emotional bias -- irrespective of truth or falsity -- can be implanted by suggestion in the emotions of the young, hence the inherited traditions of an orthodox community are absolutely without evidential value.... If religion were true, its followers would not try to bludgeon their young into an artificial conformity; but would merely insist on their unbending quest for truth, irrespective of artificial backgrounds or practical consequences. With such an honest and inflexible openness to evidence, they could not fail to receive any real truth which might be manifesting itself around them. The fact that religionists do not follow this honourable course, but cheat at their game by invoking juvenile quasi-hypnosis, is enough to destroy their pretensions in my eyes even if their absurdity were not manifest in every other direction.”

“Because the horror of Communism, Stalinism, is not that bad people do bad things — they always do. It's that good people do horrible things thinking they are doing something great." [Six Questions for Slavoj Žižek, Harper's Magazine, November 11, 2011]”

"Capitalism has created an accounting apparatus in the shape of the banks, syndicates, postal service, consumers' societies, and office employees' unions. Without big banks socialism would be impossible."

The Pessimist sees only the dark in the tunnel.
The optimist sees the light at the end of the tunnel.
The realist sees a train coming in the tunnel.
The train driver sees three complete pr!*ks sitting on the fu*k!ng railway line.
I questioned more than just that one... I was looking for the one that starts basic "the optimist says ... the pessimist says ..." then states "the capitalist drinks the water" but I went with it. :/ http://www.sickipedia.org/getjokes/similar/142457

I have said that the Declaration of Independence is the ring-bolt to the chain of your nation's destiny; so, indeed, I regard it. The principles contained in that instrument are saving principles. Stand by those principles, be true to them on all occasions, in all places, against all foes, and at whatever cost.– Frederick Douglass, Speech Given at Rochester, New York [July 5, 1852]
