Nvidia Fx5200 : Do i need the fan on it???

Hello,

Gotta gigabyte geforce fx5200 based card not long ago and the fan has become quite noisy. Will the chipset on this card stay cool enough w/ just the heatsink and no fan???

Thanks and God Bless,
Boutros

If it came with a fan than I would not take it off w/o puting up something like this: http://www.tcwo.com/cgi-bin/webc.cgi...4oBmP0-TAFU7Rn

I agree...the fan is there for a reason.

I've been having problems with a noisy geforce4 fan for months, and finally did something about it. I popped off the fan (just the fan itself...the plastic part), added a drop of lubricant to the axel thingy, spun it around a little, and popped it back on. This didn't help a lot, but then I pried the fan slightly out (about halfway off) and it's working as quiet as ever...and spinning faster too. I think I must have pushed it on too far when I tried cleaning it with a Q-tip one day.
BTW, it's a PNY if that helps any.

I cured a noisy NVidia fan one time by using some compressed air. I blew it out really good and it was good as new. Of course I've tried it and it has failed to work. Just depends on the problem. Also, sometimes when a fan is making a noise it is because it is not spinning fast enough. You should check to make sure it is not making a noise and barely turning.

nvida are natorious for heat, i have a mx440 with 64mg of ram and it needs a fan, to fix your problem you have three options, buy a fan from a computer shop for you card, run by radion sharck pick up a pentium 1 heatsink and some compund or take of the fan spray some cleaner/wd40 in it and cleann it out good until it spins freely

your 5200 should come with temperature monitoring software when you install the proper graphics drivers, at least my 5700 ultra does, which means you can probably find out for yourself with some trial and error being very very careful to always watch the heat and never play games my card hovers between 37 and 48 degrees (no load to gaming) normally and 42 to 56 overclocked as long as it stays below about 68-70 it shouldnt hurt your card any

thanks all,

i did leave it on. I tried to spray it w/ compressed air and i had a lubricant w/needle tip and i put a little of that in there. Still a little noisier than new but not as bad as before. Also i think i may have an old 486 sink and fan i may see if that will fit.

thanks again,
Boutros

If you peel back the sticker on the fan (you may have to remove it for this part), you can put a drop of oil in the hole underneath the sticker and it will help quiet it down.

thanks PCG,

pelled back the sticker and oiled it a little. Turn the pc back on and thought man is that quiet!!! then i realized i forgot to plug the fan back into the power on the card!

Left it off for awhile, and kept checking the sink for heat. After about 1hr it was fairly hot so i plugged the fan back in. Anyway, the fan is much quieter after the 2nd oiling.

Thanks to all,
Boutros

if you can go for an hour like that and noise is really an issue, then you may want to remove the fan altogether, a non-running fan will slow the dissipation of heat and if you change the angles of your case fans you may be able to get an acceptable amount of airflow, just dont ever do any heavy gaming

I just bought an MX440-8X (NV18 chip, usually 280core/512mem) and was surprised it didn't come with a fan. Turns out the manufacturer underclocked it to the speed of the older MX440 (NV17 chip, 275core/400mem) so performance is the same but since the components are rated for higher speeds no fan is needed. I really don't miss the extra 5 FPS and it's nice to get rid of some noise. Here's a picture of it: http://i10.ebayimg.com/02/i/01/e1/55/19_1.JPG

BTW, I'm pretty sure this is a Dell OEM component, as I recently setup a computer for them that had the exact same card in it, and to be precise it's running at 274Mhz core and 405Mhz mem. Have it hooked up to my NEC LCD 1860NX through a DVI-D cable too.
