if this isn't some kind of apr fool's joke or something, M$ is going to be in huge trouble....cuz I sure as hell am NOT putting Vista on any of my computers. (not even my XP Box)

I am sure that by now we are all aware of the software vendors' cooperation with hardware vendors to force users to eventually upgrade to newer hardware to support newer software. However, this time I sincerely hope that something is done to prevent this kind of manipulation from occuring.

I wonder if we could raise a big enough stink aobut this to get some media coverage. If people feel angry they won't go along, but if they feel it's the price of using the computers they'll just take it.

I doubt its true. In fact it doesn't make any sense what so ever and wouldn't benefit anyone. WHy would MS care what kind of monitor you have if most DRM is going to be put into things like Processors (In fact its already in the Pentium D) I think people are just freaking out over something with absolutely no footing to stand on.

While it could easily be a piece of scare mongering, I don't just dismiss it out of hand, as I seem to recall reading somewhere that when longhorn/vista is finally launched it will be aimed specifically at "high end" hardware.

MS do have history when it comes too pulling what I'd consider "tricks". Isn't that the general basis of the anti-trust case(s) ???

I appreciate that the US DoJ seemed to rather have "dropped the ball", on that, though I don't follow the specific reasons why that should be.

The EU seems, still, to be "snarling" in the direction of MS. Whether they'd be able to see their way to preventing something that smacks of racketeering/monopolistic manipulation, well we'd have to wait and see.

Could it also just be publicly airing of such an idea to judge the levels of negativity and/or just to get some sort of reaction ???


Just like with the SCO/IBM/Novell etc etc case, you have to just "watch this space" !

WinXP slowed down my computer enough. I've said time and again that it's pretty sad that FC4 Linux (certainly not the fastest distro by a longshot) on a P3 500Mhz machine runs almost as fast as my P4 1.5Ghz WinXP machine. It's something that I hope Linus and his generals can continue to preserve as the Kernel grows ever larger.

That said, I will NOT be upgrading to Longhorn. I just graduated from the University and don't have money to shell out for a brand new computer good enough to run Longhorn. Not only that, but this reaks of a Win98 where they did Win95, 98, 2000. I hear that blackcomb, or whatever the next one is, is coming out really soon anyway, so what's the point?

I don't know about the others, but I don't have the money to pay $200 now and $200 in two years for the next one. That's why I love Linux - all I have to pay for is the hardware and I have the option of donating to my favorite distro/program, but it's my CHOICE. And it's a good thing since Ubuntu upgrades every 6 months .... can you imagine $200 every six months?

Actually that is one of the reasons why I took all my Windows machines offline, I only need them for graphic work, I dont need the bloat and the bs you get when going online with Windows. Since then my Windows machine (fresh install) boots faster, runs better, and no hassle.

Ah well, just burn lots of copies of Knoppix so that when your friends start moaning about the crap DVD quality they have to live with on their new Vista PC, you can show them the alternative :)

The best thing about Vista being DRM-enabled? The biggest reason Windows has so many users is: It Just Works.(TM)

Meh instead of complaining about MS complain to hollywood who forces this ridiculous crap into everything. The linux community would be just as effected as anyone else. Once you find out your PC's no longer play and High Def content that comes out on Blu-Ray or HD-DVD. Oh wait thats already happening with DVD. Lest we forget what happened only a few short years ago. Also anyone think about what happens when they find out that their Blu-Ray or or HD-DVD players htey get doesn;t connetc to their HDTV that predates DVI? I know mine doesn;t have a DVI input.....The sorce of this problem is the greedy assholes in Hollywood who put out crap and then whine how they make no money and and try and fix that by forcing users in all facets of entertainment to comply with some craptacular DRM protection instead of actually puting out something people feel like paing the ten bucks to see.
