Lightbulb New to open source - how to publicise my app?

Hullo all - I've been working on a project called phpFinder, and I think it's dead handy. I use it to access my home PC from college, in case I need a file not on my USB stick.

Now I'm sure there are plenty of other Linux users out there who would find my work really useful, but the problem is how to let them know it exists.

I don't like these sites like Hotscripts (too much paid-for stuff) and setting up a Sourceforge project seems very daunting, especially for something that I only work on occasionally.

I guess I'm giving myself some exposure right here, but what I really want is some advice pointing me to somewhere I'm going to get noticed, and people will see my app. I don't think anything exactly like it exists yet, so there may be a niche "market".

Any thoughts?
Cheers

Hello Napalm,

I hope you don't mind, but I just submitted your application to Linux Today. I checked it out and it looks very good - which is why I'm hoping it will be accepted by the LT admins and get the publicity it deserves.

Great app, and keep up the good work.

Cheers,

-jk

Yup - as this project gains popularity you will get more developers who wish to work on it, so making a Sourceforge project is probably the best thing. It'll make managing the project much easier.

Also try to get this published on a few Linux and PHP news sites - then you will definitely get more traffic.

Cheers,

[edit] Oops. To reduce the bandwidth the visitors will suck up, coralise your links. That is, for every download add '.nyud.net:8090' to the end - eg. http://www.yellowmackerel.co.uk/os/p....nyud.net:8090

That'll hopefully keep your problems down for the time being

Cool - I've applied for Sourceforge hosting.

Be watching http://sf.net/projects/php-finder ...

[edit]
Yay! It's up! Both releases are available for download, and now I'm working on improving the website
