New comcast broadband rates

This may be a western US phenomenon only, but Comcast recently decided to raise broadband rates by $10 because they felt the service was "undervalued". So what assy-ass came up with this idea? I thought the idea was to scoop up more customers by offering superior rates. Then they follow up the hike with cable TV plugs. I think the only choice for me is whether I'm too much of a broadband snob to return to dial-up. I need to mail them a dog poop with my next bill. Blah blah blah. .... .

pssst:
I'm pretty sure DSL is always an option, along with other cable providers, satellite cable, fractional T1's...

Yeah my comcast bill went up to $60 a month. Their reasoning is because I don't have the multi-product discount. These guys were supposed to be the saviour from att. Corporate is corporate I suppose. Earthlink broadband dsl is onl 40. I know dsl is slower than cable, but can anyone tell me how much of a difference there really is?

manthram 05-22-2003 02:08 PM

the speed depends on the number of people on using the cable at the time. since it is a single shared network, if there are lots of people using it the common bandwidth is hogged. if you are living in a remote palce with lot of non-computer users i guess it should be fast.

dsl being a dedicated serive with a fixed bandwidth should have a consistent speed

my comcast bill is $50 for both digital cable and the hi-speed internet

I live in an area that comcast won't bring broadband into, so I'm stuck with dialup. (unless I want to pony up the $99 a month for satellite) my web-world sucks.

I know, I know, I should be grateful that I at least have phone, power and indoor plumbing.

by the way, dialup sucks.

mcleodnine 05-24-2003 02:48 AM

Heh. Dialup is worse if you live with broadband. I spent most of last year on the road with 26,400bps as my fastest connection. A lot of the time I was using a mobile phone at 9,600bps. Painful.

Yeah, until your ISP oversells your region and then the logjam occurs at the CO. Same crack, different pipe. :)

So did you just load every web page as text?

My cable is cheaper than dial-up. $29USD/month.:D

stikboy 05-26-2003 05:52 AM

Speaking to all the CO geeks out there, I would stick with Comcast. Only because the other alternative (Qwest DSL) (and ok, I haven't done research into satellite stuff :D ) is a pain in the rear.

Maybe it was only me, but my DSL connection only ran at about half the speed as my cable connection - granted, I was only paying for their 640 kbs service, so what do you expect? But, that was the same price as AT&T was charging for cable in which I was getting 1.2 - 1.5 Mbs down.

Point 2, Almost like clockwork, I would have to reset my DSl modem and reboot my computer every night, or if I was lucky, once every two nights, because the modem lost connection. Since I was working 9pm to 6am this was a pain to do almost every night. With AT&T, I very rarely had to reset the modem, and when I did, I didn't have to reboot my machine to get a connection re-established.

But, since Comcast has become the new cable player, I haven't had to deal much with them, and, to me, the extra 10 dollars a month is worth it to keep one more thing out of Qwest's hands :D

My 2 cents, and maybe not quite worth that

awdoyle 05-26-2003 11:57 AM

Regretfully, that's a good point. The only two broadbands in town here are Comcast and Qwest too, and Qwest has given me infinitely horrible customer service. Maybe I'll just plant the bill in the catbox for a while before sending it off so the cats can scratch around with it for a while.

I hate comcast, I'm switching to DSL, where they actually allow servers. Comcast is like the cable internet for aol users.

maxkinetica 07-18-2003 12:31 PM

Well.......

I used to like Comcast. I'm out on the east coast and comcast has been around for a long time now. When I had my cable modem 2 yrs ago, I loved it, although the hardware was flaky as hell. Finally gave up trying to use it via USB and hooked it in via a second nic, but that's another gripe.

Problem is, I've been wandering the country for some time, and finally came back to my home state of Maryland about 9 months ago. This time however, I'm living in Baltimore City. Comcast pretty much owned all of Maryland when it came to cable service, so it was available all over the place. The exception being Baltimore City, which was owned by TCI(?) which was owned by AT&T. And they hadn't done squat with it. Comcast finally bought their lines, and have started installing cable modems, but I've been waiting SIX MONTHS for the fiber optics to be extended about 50 yards. I wouldn't complain so much if it wasn't for the fact that they've been changing the release date over and over. Plus, I'm living on one of the main tangents for the city. This street goes all the way from the Inner Harbor out to York Pennsylvania, and is probably the second most crowded street at points in the city.

Also, Comcast technicians and dispatchers are complete assholes. Out of the 15-20 that I've seen come through my work (I work at the Hopkin's Deli for anybody who lives here :P) only two of them are cool. Had a dispatcher cuss me out over the phone when I originally tried to get my service hooked up and I didn't have a phone line... (long story). So, I went with DirecTV (350+ channels baby) and I'm getting Verizon DSL. Which leads me to the point of this long post. Verizon is offering a 'Freedom Package' I think. Phone service for $49.99 with unlimited local and LONG distance (!) plus all the extras like Caller ID, Call Waiting, Voice Mail, etc. etc. If you get that package, they only charge you 29.99 for DSL! I think it's a hell of a deal. Unfortunately, I only qualify for 768k DSL in my area, however, if anyone else happens to get this, you CAN qualify up to 1.5Mbps for the same price. So, for $80 I've got a long distance friendly phone provider (and that means Hawaii and Alaska, Puerto Rico, :P) so my fiance can call her parents in California, and I've got decent speed broadband coming with and upgrade in a few months. Not too bad :)

Also, I would HIGHLY suggest not getting cable modem service unless you live out in a county somewhere. In Baltimore City, the thoroughput sucks a phattie.

jbeedham 07-24-2003 09:33 PM

It is an outrage comcast has raised prices. You know they are doing it just so they can pay for their buyout of AT&T Broadband.
