LinuxQuestions.org - New Bluetooth pairing standard ?

The question am asking is there a new standard in the Bluetooth pairing standard? And by new, I could mean any paring standard that was introduced after the original standard. I'm sort of out of the loop when it comes to new standard, so it could have been announced many years ago, I just missed the memo.

As I understand it, (although I could be wrong) the old way (the only way I remember) to pair tooth devices, is that one device became the discoverable device and the second device claims the first device. When you set a device as "discoverable" the device must by design have a secret code. The second device will search-out the first one. Once the 1st device is discovered, the 2nd device will prompt the use for the secret code of the 1st.

I recently can across a keyboard (my 1st Bt kbd) that does not use the above standard. When I tried paring the Bt kbd (cheep quality with little documentation) to my Android phone, I was perplexed because the kbd did not seam to follow the standard.

When I was able to pair the keyboard to the android, I set the keyboard to "discoverable". I was then able to discover it with my Android, however The Android device prompted my to enter in a code on the Bt kbd. After doing so, the android was paired to my keyboard. Is this a new Bluetooth pairing standard? Or is this some sort of trick that only works with Android and iOS devices? Could you in theory pair that with a BSD or Linux OS (not Android) using the Bluetooth standard?

Is there a name for the the two types of parsing such as "Bluetooth pairing standard 1.2A" and "Bluetooth pairing standard 3.6C"? I originally purchased the keyboard so that I can pairing it with a device that is neither Android or iOS, It looks like I will not be able to use the keyboard with the device, however If I knew what the proper nomenclature was, perhaps I could search for a solution.
