Don't convert people. You shouldn't have to "sell" linux. State the facts and let them decide. A lot of people won't convert untill the gaming issue is fixed. I had to reinstall XP this weekend so I could play bf1942. It sucks, but I enjoy the game.

I agree, or at least don't disagree - you have to be careful how you promote Linux. A lot of people - and not just microsoft lackey nitwits like that Enderle guy (who doesn't count as he'd be that way no matter what) - are put off by 'Linux zealots'. Windows-bashing is probably not the way to go. Most of us here happily bash Windows all day long but we're preaching to the choir. A lot of Windows users are just going to feel insulted if you trash Windows, since that's what they use, and it sets things up in an antagonistic way - they're likely to feel bullied or likely to get defensive and fight back, clinging to Windows more strongly. I mean, ob Kenobi reference (obi Kenobi reference?): some people 'with weak minds are easily swayed by the Source' but most aren't. If conversion is your game, better to just make a really sweet desktop and fire up some cool apps, maybe run xnest and show 'em KDE and Gnome at the same time. Ooh aah. So they think, 'Man, that's cool. I want that. And it's free?? So I could *get* that.' Carrots rather than sticks.
I think some of the coolest things are having 6 terminals plus X and tab completion and history recall and suff like that, but that doesn't tend to impress most folks.
But I'm not a real Linux missionary, anyway.
