I've used cooperative linux and it worked well. The only downside is that you have to dedicate a fixed amount of RAM toward it in a config file. Mine runs fine with 256MB and I even setup a gui using VNC (you can't use X as windows is using your video card).

Or download Damn Small. There's a version that runs under XP (I think it's built on QEMU). Both of these install easily. If you want internet access with them, you just have to enable Windows ICS (and with coLinux I had to install some drivers).

If you only need it to use the console and run bash programs, you might consider installing CygwinX. I installed it on my computer at work to be able to use sed, enscript, latex, and other tools I need.

I run Vmplayer in winXP when I need to actually be in windows but want to use Linux.

Download the vmplayer from www.vmware.com then download one of the Community Appliances or the Browser applinace (Ubuntu). Or you can use one of the online vmx creators so you can install your distro of choice on a virtual drive.

I do just the opposite on my Debian system , I run vmplayer with XP installed .
