My Vista tryout
Hello all,
I just tried the windows vista public beta. It failed 3 times on my machine. Here are the specs: amd 3000+ 64bit (running 2.2 ghz) 1 gig ddr400 ram 160 gb 7200rpm 8 mb cache drive (gave it 30gb) nvidia fx5500oc It ran out of memory 3 times in a row. So in my opinion, it is garbage! I have never, and I repeat never, had any OS run out of memory on my system. I decided to try it to see if it was worth anything. So IMHO it is junk. Really just a heads up since it took 6 hours to download and I managed to make a useless coaster out of a dvd. Just a warning I suppose! |
Heh, I'm downloading the 64-bit version right now. I'm not expecting much, but am kinda curious.
|
I had beta1 like at the end of last year... No sounblaster audigy 2 support so I downloaded the driver from the web but only got distortion! 2 days later after tweaking around in the control panel, there was finally music!!!
I remember right, the audigy 2 is a 24bit card and vista is for 16 bit sound cards by default so requires much adjusting! Don't remember much other problems but tons of annoying confirmation dialogs so I deleted it a few days later! |
How do you get to download Windows Vista beta? don't we have to pay for that?
|
Would you pay for an un-tested car, with the manufacturer asking you to please feel free to report back when you notice little errors, like completely malfunctioning brakes, or when the steering wheel locks just as you're driving through a corner? Alright, maybe I'm exaggerating things a little ;)
I think you can download it here, but don't be surprised if you encounter big problems if you decide to try it! |
I think you have to be a beta tester to get it from microsoft but I think it is common on filing-sharing/torrent sites... The version I had came from the usenet and was released by a group called winbeta!
This group even tell you the number required to install it. For it is a Microsoft number and that number is... (err, sorry) but they don't give you activation and all of their numbers are blacklisted by microsoft so whatever you get by winbeta, you can't use for more than 30 days anyway! It's sort of like a piracy tryout program... Website but they don't downloads there: http://www.winbeta.org/ You can see the NFO for the latest vista build but of course the number is removed for purposes of being published on the web even if it is already a blacklisted number! http://www.nforce.nl/index.php?switc...wnfo&id=104988 |
Of course, it is still a beta.

(OK, you may call anyone a beta tester who got it, but...) Edit: Sorry, JunctaJuvant already posted that link. |
I must say that I am very impressed with MS releasing a beta for the public to try before release. I'll be downloading it and installing it in vmware on my ubuntu system.

im surprised to see such a reaction from anti_microsoft.
i tried it maybe two years ago when it was called Longhorn and wasnt much different than XP. their website for it looks pretty nice though, and im sure thats just how the OS will be too: good for looks. for me it seems it would be like KDE, but without as much flexibility, and with much higher hardware requirements. |

So please believe me when I say my name has notta to do with the results vista provided. It simply ran out of memory, I did not make it do it. I was just posting the results to warn others about how I wasted 6 hours of my life for it not to work, your milage may vary! |
i was playin' around anti!
you seem quite mature and not like one of those 'i use linux because i hate bill gates and monopolies'. my initial comment was for fun. and i hope it doesnt come to me to have to try out vista! seeing your specs and result, i dont think my computer would run vista at all either. |
