My neighbor gave me a $14,000 computer...wow

Yep, he knew i was building a new comp for the first one, and he wanted me to experiment with this case, even though it'snt ATX.

This guy never lies, he's like my best friend neighbor, he's 45 I believe, he makes ideas to make machinery that makes CPU's better, so yea, he has the money :D But anyway...

This thing is 6-7 years old, and I guess thats why it is so expensive, because of the specs on it looking back at 7 years ago. Its a cmopaq Workstation, and lemme tell ya, its a tank. about 130 pounds.

Specs:

dual 400mhz processors
7 hard discs, each have about 2-3 gigs.
3 sticks of ram, not sure how much MB
some video card. He said its a pretty fancy one because that's what they used this workstation for, to ouput graphic design for products.
3 floppy drives with them installed, 3 cd-rom drives
huge motherboard
just so much to go on. Ill take a pic of it today, this thing is a TANK. I'm sure tux can think of a good way to keep this thing busy ;)

make tux dance on a ice berg surrounded by fish?

Oh one of those expensive hunks of metal.. yeah, back in the day they were expensive, most use them as heavy paperweights nowadays or scrap metal.. ;)

I think you can get what your describing off ebay for couple hundred bucks now, that's if anyone is willing to pay the shipping costs that cost more than the machine itself these days.. :p

acid_kewpie 06-20-2004 09:16 AM

sounds like junk to me... he's saved himself the trip to the tip by giving it to you...

Brain Drop 06-20-2004 10:46 AM

It do be older but I would not say it do be junk. There are many things you could use something like that for.

MiccyNarc 06-20-2004 02:24 PM

It's $50 now... :)

SciYro 06-20-2004 09:30 PM

use it to play (or make) a video of tux dancing on a ice berg surrounded by fish!

I got ahold of a server that was in three sections. Had a good ole time playing around with it. I owner even left NT4 on it figuring anyone would need a password. :) Anyway, it had the old 72 pin memory and 100Mhz proc.
After I got tired of tripping over it, I put out by the road curb and it was gone in a couple of hours. Man that thing was major poundage. !!!

the case that holds my AMD64 is a hulking server case. Used to hold a Dual 200mhz SCSI setup (till some kid decided to take it apart and fried it when I had it at my old school for demos with linux). 3 feet tall. two feet deep, the frame alone (no sidepanels or PSU) weighs about 10 pounds. Personally, I love it. Basic setup with just two case fans, cpu fan, and the builtin northbridge fans, the hottest my CPU has gotten is 120 degrees (and it idles about 105 and has been as low as 98). I dont even have my extra OC gear in yet, but its running that cool. How many other cases (especially steel) allow you to run AMD's that cool?

Ever play with one of those late 80s IBMs? THOSE were tanks! Complete with mondo carrying handle and warning label: "Caution! 50lb (20Kg)! You may throw your back out!" ..or something to that effect. Fully sealed, insulated panels. Close the door and it made a "shoop" sound like a car door, and was about as heavy. Only the best for your 386..

Mega Man X 06-22-2004 07:40 AM

Sounds really cool. That'd be a neat server too. I wish I have room for that, but after building an Arcade machine, there's not much space left at all here :S

xt 80286

XT 80286, ?? MHz, 512k RAM. 30 MB HD (one of the strangest ones). That was a real tank. (one that even sounded like a tank, i used to play a simulator there because the sound, well the sound... And that 12" monitor... ).

Spoil sports, let the man enjoy his thing :)

amosf 09-15-2004 07:19 PM

Dual 400mhz cpus is not junk - not yet at least... That would be better than my p3-700 I think, or at least near as good... Should be a cool box to play with - and still worth a few bucks today as a server or whatever. I'd love to have it!
