My Link Directory Application: Please Help Beta Test This

I had asked Jeremy previously whether this was allowed and I got his kind permission to do so. I request the moderators (to whom he left the final decision to decide) to allow this.

I have developed a link directory application in PHP / MySQL and I have now put it online for beta testing. It is planned to be a fairly simple one, not heavy on features, but not exactly lacking either.

Feel free to play around with it and test it to the limit.

It is still incomplete (as far as features are concerned), but it is fairly functional at the moment. Once I complete the admin panel and do a lot more stuff, I will probably be releasing it under GPL or similar license, but that is still a long way away.

Currently I request members of this forum to help me beta test it.

Here is the link to the test link directory: http://links.literaryforums.org

Current features:
  1. User registration and login to submit links.
  2. Latest n links displayed in index page. [n configurable through configuration file]
  3. Links according to categories. [links in each category displayed separately]
  4. Contact admin form.
  5. Anonymous link submission allowed/disallowed [configurable]
  6. Registration flood control (time gap between 2 registrations from the same IP) [time configurable in minutes].
  7. Link submission flood control from same user [separately configurable time gap in seconds for users and guests].
  8. Approval of links before they appear [on/off configurable separately for guest/registered user].
  9. Max links displayed per page and max categories per page configurable separately.

Features in planning/progress (not necessarily in same order):
  1. Registered user list and links submitted by specific users displayed separately.
  2. User Control Panel to modify/edit/delete links.
  3. Search feature.
  4. Administrator separate panel with separate login and authentication. Administrator tasks: Approving (if required) and managing (add, remove, edit) links, categories, users and other tasks.
  5. Admin notifications to users on link approval. [configurable on/off]
  6. Notification to admin on new link submission. [configurable on/off]

This is not an exhaustive list and the application is still in infancy and rapidly under development. More features shall make its way to the list.

Please post your general feedback, comments, feature questions, feature requests and such here. However I would be much obliged if people could post bug reports, errors and such through the feedback form in the site.

NOTE:

Don't worry about posting related links at this stage. We need to test it and at a later stage most of the test data will be removed (except valid, genuine related links of course).

I also want to point out that current in my setup registering has been made compulsory to submit links (to basically cut down spam). So feel free to register.

I would like some active feedback on features, ideas for implementing an admin interface and so on. I would also be glad for security tips and issues. I've done my best to code with security in mind.

About Registering
You don't need to provide a valid e-mail address at this stage because the application is still under testing, though you can always provide a e-mail ID that you use for signing up things on the web. E-mail ID is not revealed anywhere publicly. But of course, if you want to actively provide feedback and you want me to get back to you, please provide a valid e-mail.

Thanks

stabile, thanks!

Anywhere will do. If it is any critical error or problem (in your opinion), then I think you might want to send me an email

lol well ok i tried out that "Contact" link on the site hope it works lol. Anyways overall i see no errors yet but I did send some comments of things I would like to see and would make the system more convenient to use how hard they would be to implement I dont know but I figured I would mention it anyways.

Hmm there are a few other things I am going to recommend I will post it here if you don't mind.

1) When I did contact I was taken back to the Home page. A contact information confirmation page (lieka screen that says "Thanks for the feedback you wil recieve a reply shortly click here to go home" would be nice so I can see that when I submitted it actually was sent. Also a Confirmation for adding links would be nice. It may be annoying to some but it insure thats everything is correct. So if I submit a link when I click submit it will be like "Here is what it will look like is the above information correct?" That way one can make any last mintue changes (spelling or link errors) before it posted and then ened to wait for a webmaster to take a link down and then repost it.

Stabile,

The contact system works. I got e-mail message. Thanks for the feedback. Good ideas. The profile system idea was something I'm planning on doing once I get the basic structure of the site programmed.

As you know, it'll take a while to finish, but I'm very excited about it. Once the admin panel gets done (and it'll be done at the very end), I'll probably be releasing this under an Open Source License.

Regards.

Are you using IE? I think you are. Because in FF you get a confirmation message displayed and then it gets redirected to the home page.

I think it's an IE problem handling the "header" fields. I heard of this on this forum before. I am not sure of how to work around this which will work with all browsers.

I think asking for confirmation on every click will be a bit annoying. However, in future, I will add an option for users to edit submitted links so that any errors can be fixed. This is going to be part of the user panel.

Ah, thanks. That's good to hear.

Err... you mean that a link is removed from the recent list? That's not a timeout. I just display the latest n submitted links. (currently set to 5 but configurable).
