my funniest video-game moments

Behold my favorite gags from the limited number of video games I've played, or seen someone else (usually my brother) play. These also include computer responses from those blessed smart-mouthed games in the eighties and nineties. In no particular order:

We rented Double Dragon (the original) and, after discovering the versus mode, played "Abobo vs. Abobo" until we got sick from laughing too much. Abobo's name was funny enough, and watching the character run was funnier, but making the Aboboes run into each other and be hurled backward took the game to a new level.

"In this universe, you can't drink sand." --quotation from the computer IF game "Star Trek: The Promethean Prophecy."

While playing Grand Theft Auto, my brother drove a car up a staircase.

The first time I saw my brother play Goldeneye 007, he was in the Facility restroom trying unsuccessfully to blow up the toilets with his remote mines.

"I don't like 'TRANGERS tresp'ssin' in muh HOUSE!" --a grumpy gnome in King's Quest V.

"Phew! The SMELLY old fish is disgusting." --King's Quest V.

In a bowling alley, I watched two older kids playing a stunt racing game called Hard Drivin'. The one at the wheel drove the car up a 360 loop. Just as he reached the apex, he drove the upside-down car off the side of the loop. I never knew whether he did it on purpose, but I've never laughed so heard as I laughed at the slow-motion replay. (The kids got annoyed and accused me of being gay.)

"Uhura does not react at all. Apparently she's pretending your remarkable breach of propriety never happened." --Star Trek: The Promethean Prophecy

"ZRAPP! You turkey, you really made a mess! Smoke's everywhere..." --quotation from a shovelware IF game, caused by firing a blaster without specifying a target.

Circa 1995, my then-second-best-friend introduced me to the original Mario Kart. When we raced, I irritated him by driving into a lake and driving backwards. (He was ill-tempered and humorless.)

Here are some funny or fun gaming experiences of mine:

Joint Ops:
Probably the most destructive weapon was a motorcycle + satchel charges (high explosives). If you did it just right you could put 1 satchel charge on the front wheel guard and 1 on the rear wheel guard such that they stuck. Then all you had to do was drive next to an enemy tank, jump off or switch to rear seat and press the button, the result was absolutely devastating. I once took out a large group using this method, including 2 tanks and many bystanders. Sometimes you could live through the event if you jumped off early enough and were headed in the right direction. The rest of the game was kinda boring.

ETQW:
This one got me banned from nearly all the servers, not sure why. As an Oppressor you can get a Hog buggy, put 3 shields on the front, if placed correctly you will take no damage from any projectile hitting you from the front no matter how powerful, then drive to the enemy base ripping through any vehicles or people in you path. When outside the gates you can either wait for someone to open the gate and rush in killing everyone in your path, get out and toss an orbital strike beacon then kill everyone you can using shields as cover OR you can toss a beacon over the gate and wait for them to run out, then run them down, avoid the strike, then kill everyone using shields as cover. Sometimes you live long enough to toss many such beacons ... often this can change the whole outcome of the game. But the admins don't seem to like it. Incredible fun tho, I guess I'm now banned from nearly all servers for this ... it was worth it I can tell you, I was laughing so hard.

Rogue Spear:
This was quite fun for me, not necessarily funny tho, even tho I did laugh plenty. There was a map where one team spawns near a cabin and the rest spawn behind a large building. The cabin can be easily defended from attack. So this time the enemy team had the cabin. When the game started my entire team all rushed to the cabin via the closest route ... the predictable route. I decided it was a bad idea and too the long way around to sniping point a bit further from the cabin in a more concealed area. I saw my team get massacred, they all died in less than 30 sec. Then there was silence, they taunted me to come to the cabin, but I said nothing. Then they came out one by one. I had a Steyr AUG, not a sniping weapon, but still good at medium to long range, and as they came out I picked them off one by one. The last two came out together but I managed to kill them both without taking too much damage. They were rather angry with me, saying I cheated and was a camper ... I cheated and camped no more than they did.

There was also the time where I was the last one on my team against another more experienced player on the enemy team. At one point I heard something behind me, I spun around and shot ... at the same time he shot ... we died together.

Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance:
I was playing with my brother, me Sub Zero vs. Bo' Rai Cho. After much fighting we were both almost dead, and then something very funny happened: At the same time that Bo' Rai Cho uses the vomit superpower (where he vomits on you making you slip) I impaled him with the ice sword. It was hilarious and perfectly timed and completely unintended.

And there more, but I can't remember them right now.

Er, wow...you seem to like the kill-kill-kill games. There's a game in which the villain barfs on you?

H_TeXMeX_H 05-09-2009 08:57 AM

Well, yeah, those are the most fun. Not necessarily for the killing in and of itself, but rather the way in which it is done and numbers involved :)

Yeah, the newer Mortal Kombat games tend to be kinda gruesome, disgusting, even lewd. Still the one I posted was one of the better ones, I bought a few after this one and they really suck in comparison.

Ah, and I remembered another very fun game:

Aliens vs. Predator
The most fun I had in a game, ever. I mostly used the predator, and it was best before they made the predator invisibility much more visible, which sucked, I stopped playing after that. So what I did was just sneak around while invisible and decapitate people then hide. It was absolute hell on the human team. I mean you would just be walking around with your team hunting aliens, and then suddenly someone gets decapitated. Then they'd try to cover the area with arms fire, but by that time I was in a safe location. Then they'd move along a bit and I'd decapitate another one. Then there was the plasma if there was no place to hide, a few plasma balls and the entire team would be roasted. Or you could use the disk (had the ability to control it in flight, like in the movie), and you could decapitate very easily with that, that was more for outdoors where it was hard to get the target. Anyway, in this game the predator was so good that I once entered a game of aliens vs humans (marines) midgame, chose a predator and ended up with a higher score and # kills than the sum of all kills of all other players on both the other teams, and I was the only predator. Basically, a true army of one. Pity they ruined it by first making the predator more visible then most servers banned plasma and disks and you were left with the close combat only.

Oh man, I have so many but they are all mostly about the Discworld series, and some others. I briefly remember playing King's Quest, but that was a long time ago.

I have recently played Discworld II again through emulation (first on expse (PS emulator) and then MS Virtual PC loaded with Win98se, which worked rather flawlessly).

I would quote some lines from both games, but it wouldn't do them justice, so I can't help but add some links for all to see. Terry Pratchett is so awesome!

I miss the old days of gaming. There was another game, called BrainDead 13, it was more of an interactive movie type game, kinda frustrating, but the scenes and gags alone were worth it.

There are other scene in the game, it depends on how the player chooses where to go as well since it is not really a 'linear' game. These games were really cool IMHO.

The beginning of Earthworm Jim, in order to progress further from the first level you have to launch a cow. Also the objective of the game is to save the princes "Princess-whats-her-name" (Yes, thats the actual name). Also Earthworm Jim2, more wacky moments in that. Both games however are quite difficult.
