My First Slackware Install

Well, since all my family and friends (tech's also) are into windo$e they can't appreciate the joy this gives me. So, I thought I would post it here.

Since I have been learning Linux I have wanted to use a Distro that did not hold my hand and do everything for me. So, I decided that I would take the plunge and install Slackware 8.1 on my extra 8gb drive. It has been great resolving the problems that pop up. It give such a feeling of acomplishment.

First had problems with my Intellemouse - Resolved

Of course had to setup xwindows. Got that going.

I have a Junk onboard AC97 VIA sound card - Found how to start and where to add so it starts while booting.

VESA error while booting. - Resolved, found how to disable.

Setting up my dvd and cdrecorder. Found how to properly set this up.

But, the COOLEST part about this is getting the proper NVIDIA drivers installed and working properly

All I can say to any newbies out there, all these things I have listed I got going by reading the Install Docs and the most important, SEARCHING THIS FORUM.

I still have alot to setup but as you can see I am able to use my new slack install very productivly. So, THANKS to everyone on this board for the great info.

Dave

My first distro was slackware based and it taught me alot matter of fact I'm installing it again as I type on a pent. 166 MMX with 16 Mb of ram. Glad to hear that you joined the slack club. I also agree that this is the best place for info on Linux.

Thanks MasterC, sure does feel good. I have learned so much with slack.

Just got through setting up Shorewall. Very nice. I had been used to SuSE's firewall. But Shorewall has very good docs.
