Which error does your boss get, and in which format are the documents saved that he cannot open using MSword '07?
Are they saved as .odf ? or .doc? or .docx?

Thank you for your responsiveness
the file is saving as in doc, and the error message is something like a board meeting of problems must be close

I think that's what he said!! The only question is .doc vs .docx

What version of Word is boss using?

I always use "Word 97/2000/xp" and people can always read the files.

My version of OpenOffice does not appear to have the option to save in .docx
???

Try Saving the documents in *.docx* format.
Go to "File >Save As" then in the Save As window select the Microsoft Word 2007 XML format from the Drop Down Menu right above the Save & Cancel buttons,

I think the problem is due to virus. Clamav found those virus on my laptop:

winnow.compromised.ts.jsexploit.5.UNOFFICIAL

winnow.spam.ts.domains.158.UNOFFICIAL

gspace.js: winnow.malware.cm.miscspam.387929.UNOFFICIAL

Try "Microsoft Word 2007 XML (.docx)".
