Question Music on Linux...timidity?

Just installed RHF3 and have a lot of software that I am now "investigating", etc. (Linux newbie here). I produce a lot of midi files and later convert them to MP3 for sale. I did this with Win software with my previous OS, but now I am wondering if anyone out there knows or uses anything to convert Midis to MP3s on Linux.

Also, a second question, but somewhat related....I associated my midi files with "timidity" as suggested in RHFL3 Bible. I double click on the midi file and it plays but it does not open up the software to show controls, etc....it just plays until the midi ends. Is there anyone familiar with this program and how can I get it to display.

I checked the other threads on this and could not find anything specific to these two questions.

Thanks,
MrMich

MIDI to Mp3 conversion can be done using an output plugin for XMMS.

If you have timidity installed (not the hardware MIDI drivers), then you can just play the song in XMMS and use the "disk writer plugin" to record the song as a raw audio file in the hard disk.

You can then use libmp3lame or a similar library to do MP3 encoding.
