mplayer for Windows - aspect ratio problem

Since mplayer is a pretty versitile player in Linux, I tried it in Windows 2000. I tried version "MPlayer 1.0rc1 Windows" and a GUI interface called "MPlayer 1.0rc1 Windows GUI". Both were downloaded from:
http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/dload.html

This particular version has an aspect ratio problem where every file you play is horizontally stretched, so it looks abnormally wide. I don't see any aspect ratio controls in this GUI, so I guess it is what it is and there is no fixing it.

I'm not sure if the problem lies in the GUI interface or the version of mplayer for Windows. Any idea if Windows version 1.0rc1 has a known problem with aspect ratio?

If the problem is the GUI interface, is there a better Windows GUI for Mplayer someone would recommend?

Thanks,
Eric

I'm afraid I can't really answer that question. I'm just wondering whether you actually need mplayer or whether you just want to enjoy its large number of codecs. If it's the latter, you could also install something like K-lite mega codec pack, or VLC. As for configuring mplayer, I'm sure this sort of issue could be solved in Linux by editing the .mplayer config file in your home directory; but as so often, it's hard to find out whether windows has an equivalent and, if so, where.

found a GUI that plays videos correctly

Good news!

I just tried another GUI control for mplayer that plays videos with the correct aspect ratio. It can be found at:
http://mpui.sourceforge.net/

You are correct, I do like the wide range of codecs that mplayer offers.

Best wishes!

is there a mplayer-specific forum?

Does anyone know if there is a forum specific to mplayer? I would be interested to know about it if there is. Thanks!

Eric
