Ha, keep mocking. The day isn't far when Ubuntu will chew and spit out every distro out there, if it isn't already doing so. Sure, your communities can all hold on in their "free" time supporting their respective distros, but without the moolah to back it with, no long runs in the future. Before Ubuntu, Linux couldn't even manage a share inspite with a proud 20 years or so of its existence however else the elitists might think. General consumer companies are slowly spawning debs along with setup.exe's, so ya know what is going to be the standard on Linux OS. Till then, keep mocking.

It's sort of controversial to note that usually it's military where one finds this sort of two-word names that don't generally mean anything wise, but that some people consider relevant (in some weird way) to the thing they represent---typically all sorts of operations are named this way, for a variety of reasons (and often containing sounds that are somewhat difficult to pronounce by non-natives). But maybe Ubuntu, standing for humanity and all, is the exception to the rule :)

You seem to be very definite on this. I think differently. As long as source is available, there will be miriads of distros available. Not everyone will want to use Ubuntu.

Indeed, I had thought the same about rpms but the more I look out there, the more I see the debs, probably attributed to the inferior package management of rpm when compared to debs, which is weird for a Fedora user like me in more sense than one when I thought RH had it in the bag.

Yeah probably, but look at the situation today. The source is there, the myriads of distros are there, and how many new converts do you see using all of them? And how many try Ubuntu? and why..? It is pretty clear, Ubuntu has managed to go where no distro has gone before. I'm just pissed at all the negativity around Ubuntu, it not only has to fight the people outside, but deal with the bunch from the inside too. FFS, we have one contender in modern OS times, who can actually cross over and take the fight to the monopolistic regimes, and all they want is to pull it down to their own petty little community level and beat about the bunch.

That's fair, but I still can't agree. I'll come half way and say that perhaps Ubuntu could become the defacto "save us from MS" Linux OS. But on the other hand, there will always be many distros, chosen by those who want to try something other than Ubuntu.

And I really don't see any disrespect to Ububtu as an OS, either in this thread, or others. Sure, people are making fun of the names, but not the OS. Though I don't use it myself, I think Ubuntu is doing wonders for the community.

I'm mocking the release names, not the distro itself. I've tried Ubuntu (from 6.06 to 8.04, haven't tried 8.10 or 9.04) and it was OK, installed and ran without a hitch. But as a purely personal preference (****ing alliteration is catching!), I find Slackware more involving and interesting.

Really now, let's be real. Ubuntu will continue with two word names. It will probably be Geriatric Gerbil.
