Minix

Hey
Its nearly summer now and that means I'll have time to start a new project. I've made myself a LFS build this year and after learning more about the origins of Linux i'm just thinking about tinkering with MINIX.

Is anyone still playing around with MINIX ? And would you recommend it as a useful learning experience or could my time be better spent getting to know the Linux kernel better ?

Thankyou please

Yeah, I tinkered with Minix in my OS class at college. Apparently they are still doing new releases of it, too ;)

what kind of ataris will minix run on?

Okay, WTF is a DellLinux? It's not a distro... that I know. And with SuSE 9 - why use another?

delIlinux with an I not two L 's and yes it is a distro. And quite obviously if I am running SuSE it is not on an Atari...why did you even bother to post?

Check the links at the very bottom of the page for ataris:

But anyway i guess that not many people are still playing with MINIX which is interesting since at one time it was more popular than Linux. I think ill try it anyway, it was good enough for Linus . . .

Andy Tanenbaum says that there is still a good amount of interest in Minix for what it is intended (i.e. as a simple implementation of Unix for students to learn on) and the main Minix website still gets around 1000 hits a week.

I am running minix in 16 bit mode on a 286 datatrain "portable" computer that I found in a trash bin behind a thrift store. It is the only os open-source or otherwise that I could find to run on this hardware.
