Microsoft Word - Automatic Selection Word Count?
Hi all,

I'm writing a dissertation at the moment, part of it requires for me to display the word count. The problem is, I don't want to include the word count for the reference list, bibliography etc. Is it possible to have the word count automatically updated, much like Insert -> Quick Parts -> Field... -> NumWords?

I'd like to insert the word count of selected pages.

Did you just ask a microsoft question on a Linux forum?
I assume you meant OpenOffice or LibreOffice.

Microsoft Office 2010 to be exact.

You must be knowing of course that File --->>> Properties --->>> Statistics (tab) in both MS and Open Office will give you stats for the entire file.

From here it seems possible to simply
(a) Save the file.
(b) Delete the unwanted pages (TOC, reference list, biblio etc).
(c) Run the stats.
(d) Revert to the saved file.

Offhand I dont remember whether the respective object model supports getting the stats you need. If it does, you can get a macro written. Of course, macros are messy and in windows are a way to propagate script viruses.

I mean, ifit is a one time need then just running the stats for the required data saved as a file should do.

It'll just handy, especially when proof reading and editing to save having to scroll through pages of text just to highlight the section required. Would be handy to have a function to say "Count the number of words on pages 1-10".

Unfortunately I have specialist software that only works in Microsoft Word. Not that I've ever heard of LaTeX, but I'm guessing you're not making kinky suggestions on ways to make essay writing more fun? ;)

Haha, nope - LaTeX is typesetting software (based on TeX) - basically you write everything in plain text then the software deals with the layout, managing links, bibliography, TOC etc. It's used by many engineers and people wanting to write technical documents. I love it - the documents it produces are extremely professional looking, consistent and very flexible.
