Microsoft expands anti-piracy

http://money.cnn.com/2005/07/26/tech...ex.htm?cnn=yes

I wonder if they will be able to see people who have linux installed. Could they possibly wreck the MBR so linux cant boot?

I know sounds alarmist but i dont think its beyond MS thinking.

It just says you can't use future XP apps, if you have a illegal copy.

Micro$loth was founded by a couple of petty theives.
It hasn't gotten any better in the past 20 years or so.
They use FUD and otherwise illegal tactics to keep some
people living in fear of leaving their corrupt fold. I will not
read the link. Your thread will be moved to the General forum
(most likely) so that it can get the exposure it properly deserves.

wth?

Quote:
Customers whose copies of Windows are found to be pirated have two options: send in a pirated CD and fill out a piracy form to receive a legitimate copy for no charge; or, in the case that there is no CD or proof of purchase, buy a new copy of Windows XP Home for $99 or Windows XP Professional for $149.

umm... OK?

Microsoft is targeting software piracy in places such as China, Norway and the Czech Republic, where the use of pirated software is more widespread.
Yes, in China they say "copyright means the right to copy." They don't buy Micro$loth Windoze xPeriment, or any other software. They crack it...

Maybe once the WTO starts enforcing it's rules, and requires China to abide by them (ha ha ...), the copy CDs will disappear and we can show them the benefits of Linux. As it stands, most aren't interested in spending a lot of time configuring an OS; and the gaming scene in Linux doesn't come close to matching that in Windoze. Apparently the nForce chipset support and Nvidia driver support isn't ready for the gamers who need a fix, either.

Yeah, right...I'm sure they'll do that. Don't hold your breath Billy.

they are going to go through windowz updates and anyone who tries do download an update or if the automatic updater tries to connect it will indeed make you activate your illegal copy.

You know, in Paraguay you can buy a illegal copy of XP for U$5 or less, or you can borrow one from someone and make a copy. We use a hacked version, that has no limitations at all, on our family PC, and I'm not allowed to change it to linux...

Hey, after all, Bill Gates was one of the first to steal in this industry ... stealing computer time from Harvard ... etc. Stealing and lying has been his M.O.

Moved: Microsoft news goes in General, not Linux - General. Keep the Linux technical questions in the Linux forums, place everything else in General.

explain that one? They dont have some supercomputer to put a large eye on every person who owns a PC. Thats retarded. All their saying is if you have an illegal copy of Windows you will no longer be able to do your updates via our website. Simple and plain. You agree to download and install an activeX control which they make perfectly clear will attempt to validate your copy of windows, and if you choose not to install it, that's your prerogative but dont steal a Corvette from a dealer and then take it back to the dealer expecting repairs.

Hmm, so if I understand it correctly, every time you connect to the MS update service this service will check your hardware information, then compare it to a unique Windows ID? Fascinating ...

I believe they expect it to go something like this :

Customer : "Whattayamean I can't update because my windows is a pirate copy? I paid for that thing!"
MS : "Sure you did - send us the CD and proof that you paid for it, and we'll send you a non-pirate version."
Customer : "Thank you MS! You saved me from the Evil Pirates!"
Statistics : **You have convinced one more person that MS is Holy.**

I'm sure all users of pirated software are going to turn in themselves to Microsoft. I'm also sure that Microsoft will not even consider suing them.

The world is full of goodness and honesty.

Can somone explain to me why micro$oft is unable to have a database that include sold CD Keys, instead of trying to prevent end user to crack the software ? ? ?

I cant understand why micro$oft let user that generate their own CD keys access live updates and service pack download.

Hint for the micro$oft employee that probably spy on the linux forums
CREATE TABLE `microsoft_cd_keys` (
`serial` VARCHAR( 25 ) NOT NULL ,
`product_id` INT( 5 ) NOT NULL
) TYPE = MYISAM ;

Why don't you read the rest of the sentence?

guideweb, that was done when they released service pack 1, a lot of illegal keys were blacklisted and Service Pack 1 wouldn't install on an illegal copy, of course a whole new set of keys where then made to get around it.
